WINNIPEG: THE 11,486th BEST THREAD EVER!

Greetings, y'all. I haven't been out to take photos in a while, but in the last 24 hours it went from colder than my ex girlfriend outside to a balmy - 12 degrees C., so I figured it was an ideal day for a lil' jaunt. Without further ado, I hereby thrust my shitty photography upon the world!

This should give you an idea as to the weather:
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8374/8...aba314101e.jpg
This could be in any city. Pretend it's your own!
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8509/8...48d9eeab3a.jpg
Hadn't noticed this fella before:
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8474/8...fdfd3b70_b.jpg
I'm totally going to listen to this. See how happy they look?

Some Portage Avenue action. In the foreground we see the Buhler building, a new U of W complex. Behind is the Bay's flagship store, part of which is a Zeller's that is (I believe) converting into a Target, as the chain was bought by the larger American company. The background shows the Manitoba Hydro Building (2009):
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8512/8...f6958998_c.jpg
The Budapest Institute of Technology:

Winnipeg Uber Alles!

Home of the Winnipeg Jets NHL franchise. Say what you will about the NHL, but having a team back has had a noticeable effect on local pride. It kinda feels like we're a major city again:
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8492/8...2b6f948830.jpg
Some nice detail:

Snow Marble:

Winnipeg's third tallest, the recently re-branded Artis Building:
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8360/8...9ef43fe0_z.jpg
No wonder so many meth tweakers were huddled around staring up into the sky:
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8334/8...3c631e1f_z.jpg
Some ol' Portage and Main:
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8097/8...ecbb59cf_z.jpg
I've taken a similar photo before, but give me a break. If there's a rare "density shot" to be found in this burgh, I'll damn well showcase it:
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8191/8...8010c5bc_z.jpg
Enough said:
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8326/8...87ca3bbb_z.jpg
I think the most responsible choice for me would probably be to drop more acid. Wait, how did that get in there? Forget I said that:

"Just needs some t.l.c.," my real estate agent said. "Just needs some t.l.c.:"
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8214/8...89c8466c_z.jpg
Why did I include this pointless shot? I dunno. Don't judge me:

A lil' peek into the train station:

A delightfully framed shot of the Osbourne Village residential area, south of downtown across the Assiniboine River:

A pretty good reflection of where I live:

St. Boniface, our historic French Quarter across the Red River east of downtown:

Locals know it as the Snow Bench. Maybe:
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8499/8...d5cd38aa_z.jpg
Each winter the city holds an international architecture competition in which various designs are chosen for our iconic warming huts for the skaters along the Red River. This might not be a warming hut, given it's exposed and doesn't look warm. Maybe it's just a glorified bench or something?

Part of our second largest mega - hospital:

A portion of the Universite de Saint-Boniface:

Skatin':

Bridges are good:

Nothin' quite like skating:

Frozen. Like my wage, apparently:

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights, which, after several delays, should be complete in time for my great great great grandchildren to visit:

The Manitoba Legislative Building peeking through in the distance:

Nifty:

A building roughly 4600 years old. It's a francophone museum now:
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8054/8...fbff2057_z.jpg
Louis Riel, arguably the founding father of Manitoba. In a hilarious twist, he was also hanged for treason. Good times, good times:

You heard it here first, kids:

Lookin' west across the Red:
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8470/8...eadd4eb1_h.jpg
I think we have a darn fine skyline for a metro area of around 800,000 people. Keep in mind this doesn't show the dense residential towers of Osbourne Village:

Do I have an old lamp fetish? Maybe:
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8079/8...7e17201774.jpg
Both the iconic bridge and museum faced controversy due to the costs involved, yet I must say the bridge kicks a significant amount of ass, and the yet-unopened museum sure adds a splash of life to an otherwise boxy downtown core:
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8369/8...139ae676_z.jpg
There ya go. If a filthy rich, ancient foreigner cuts the ribbon, it MUST be good! I'm headed to the sewage treatment plant tomorrow to see Prince Philip open a new sanitation pool:
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8077/8...12b39c33_z.jpg
The ol' Saint Boniface cathedral, which essentially burned to the ground in the 60s:
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8491/8...d57e63a2_c.jpg
There's an English half to this sign as well, but I thought I'd omit it to savour the ethnic flair:

Here's a thing:

Typical rental housing in St. Boniface:

This used to be St. Boniface's city hall back when it was a separate city. Now it's a tiny, underfunded museum:

The south west tower at my estate. Gotta keep the Hungarians out:

I trudged in snow above my knees to get this shot. But I'm no hero. Only a man:

Obligatory Portage and Main shot:

I'm a brilliant photographer. Don't question it:

To the left is our revolving tower restaurant (every city needs one!), soon to re-open. To the right is an alien robot monster:

I like these lil' fellas:

Here's something:

I think this is now part of a downtown Mennonite college:

I'll leave y'all with this bland shot, because it's the last one that popped up on my Flickr page:

Thanks for browsing my photos of dubious quality, folks! I hope you enjoyed a little tour of my snowy city. Have a swell evening filled with drugs, sex, rock'n'roll, and maybe some cheese. Definitely some cheese.

Word.

I really miss Winnipeg. You definitely did it justice. I've not yet heard of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (I've been gone for a loooong time), but I dig it. Thanks!

tayser Jan 28, 2013 12:46 PM

The Hudson's Bay flagship store is to become a Target? Good god, that's almost sacrilege. :uhh:

Danny Jan 28, 2013 2:29 PM

Wow! Thanks for the pics of Winnipeg in that intense cold, Lenin!

You live in a very nice city. I´ve liked the shots of people skating. Magnific!

Beautiful buildings. The river frozen is awesome. I´d like to experience a Winter there.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain!

Lenin Jan 28, 2013 6:37 PM

Thanks for the comments, folks!

I believe the Bay building currently houses both the Bay store and a Zellers store on other levels. The Bay component was downsized in floor space a few years ago, and now I think the Zellers portion will be re-branded as a Target. So as far as I know, the Bay will remain the primary tenant in the building. I could be wrong though.

Winnipeg is a cool name but most just call it by it's nickname "The Peg" and it's citizens are known as Peggers.

Winnipeg is also a poular kids story err should I say Winnie as in The Pooh. Winnie the Pooh was a Winnipeg invention due to WW1. The Winnipeg Regiment in WW! had a small bear as it's mascot and they named it after their hometown and hence the name Winnie.

Perhaps due to it's cold climate, storied past, being a centre of many political movements, or it's isolation, Winnipeg has created a HUGE arts scene. A very disproportionate number of music groups, artists, theatre groups, literary giants came from The Peg. It was the first city in the entire Americas to have a ballet and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet is still one of the most well known and respected on the planet.

Winnipeg is a very laid back sort of place and at one small moment was actually the third largest city in the country. It never boomed after WW11 like other Western Canadian cities so much of it's very rich architectural heritage is intact as well as it's easy going nature. Winnipeg unlike Cal/Ed/Van is not a place to make money and it certainly is not the preoccupation of it's residents.Peggers talk abpout theatre and the arts like Vancouverites talk about real estate.

Winnipeg really is a cool city and the city is growing at a decent clip today, faster than it has since the 60s but it's soul and charm haven't evaporated in the pursuit of the almighty buck unlike Vancouver which sold it's soul to the higest real estate bidder.

11,486th best? Methinks you undersell yourself.

theshark Jan 29, 2013 4:44 PM

Very nice! long time since i've seen one about Winnipeg

verttoit Jan 29, 2013 5:15 PM

I've always had a special place in my heart for Winnipeg. It's a small town with a lot to offer. You really captured the city now in words but in photos :) cheers for that.

billy corgan Jan 29, 2013 6:30 PM

Great pics! I have to check Winnipeg out one day (in the summer).

Lenin Jan 29, 2013 8:28 PM

Thanks again for the comments (and the info on that school), folks! When I have more energy I'll try to head to some more interesting vantage spots for photography....

mousquet Jan 29, 2013 9:06 PM

I like your comments, it makes it lively.

They're actually trying to be bilingual over there! However, whether in English or in French, the sign remains unusual to me. They replace neige by ordures over here.

LSyd Jan 29, 2013 10:09 PM

thanks for the snowy pics.

Thanks alot for the pictures ! ... a little bonjour from Quebec city ;)

Jeff Feb 1, 2013 5:47 AM

love the random nature of some of your shots!

Dr Awesomesauce Feb 3, 2013 9:46 AM

And I'd say that Winnipeg is safely one of the top-11,486 cities in the world, too. If not for an eternal winter, it'd be much higher.

Good show, old boy.

c@taract_soulj@h Feb 3, 2013 7:22 PM

Great shots and commentary!

Threads nice and lengthy to make someone wanna fly out and visit the Peg'

It's got great potential to maintain its status as "one great city" just throw in a few more tallboys in there, beef up the RT system and you're laughin

Lookin forward to the spring thread!
