Thunder Bay's school boards actually did something revolutionary years ago: they established a transportation consortium, combining all of their bus routes so that kids from all school boards rode together on the same routes. Each school board starts its schools at different times so buses can make multiple drop-offs, on-time. Students living within a certain walking distance of the school aren't eligible for bus service.

The other irony is that people are moving to neighbourhoods with no schools, having kids, then complaining about the lack of schools.

School buses are only around for 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes in the afternoon. I don't get why people get so upset about them. You know the real cause of all that traffic? All of the private vehicles with a single person in them.

The most absurd are situations where a couple both work in the same facility or neighbourhood, but both drive separately to work. I have a coworker who lives two blocks away but occasionally will drive to work. I don't have a parking spot at home, so when I get a vehicle I'll probably keep it in the parking lot at work two blocks away. :P

Many boards across Ontario have done that in recent years. In Kingston we have combined busing. When I was in high school in exurban Ottawa, we had combined busing with the elementary school and Catholic high school starting when I was in Grade 11.

It's smart that they are doing this.

But mostly, there are just a lot of stupid parents in this world. I certainly haven't interviewed thousands of them, but I know some who drive their kids to the school here (and similar situations in other cities). SOME OF THESE KIDS LIVE A 5-10 MINUTE WALK AWAY. Now, I know crime is at all time highs and children are being snatched up by complete strangers by the thousands each year in Canada, but I'd have to think a school bus over that kind of distance would be acceptable. Apparently not, for reasons varying from "no seatbelts", to "I wouldn't trust a stranger to drive my child", to "it gives me an excuse to leave work early", to "I'm a housewife and we pay someone clean to the house for us, what else am I going to do with my day, plus I get to spend more time with the kids" (no lie, I've heard this exact line from 3 different couples).
.

Sad to say it but in many cases it's also about sleeping in as long as possible or being at the last minute in the morning. If walking takes 10 minutes and driving takes 2 minutes and you're pressed for time, well...

I had a couple of Montreal people over at my house this weekend, and they exclaimed, "Your gas is cheap".. at 135.9.

vid May 27, 2014 1:20 AM

145.9 in Thunder Bay, though some stations in the central and northern parts of the city are at 139.9. Between 114 and 129 at the five reserve gas stations. The gas train stopped by a few days ago, so these prices will be in place for a couple weeks.

SignalHillHiker May 27, 2014 8:22 AM

I've seen $1.38-$1.40 lately.

Gas jumped in price here last night, like 6 or 8 cents. Wait a second, I thought that happens only on long weekends! The conspiracy theorists lied??
