Southern Metro - July Update - New Provo Airport Preparing To Go International

Expansion Development To Begin In September

Genelle Pugmire for the Provo Daily Herald @ https://www.heraldextra.com/news/loc...57Eg50v-05MbXw

...During Mayor Kaufusi’s State of the City address in February, and again at the Stadium of Fire concert on July 1, she highlighted rapid growth at the Provo Airport.

Quote:

...“Our Provo Airport has become so successful that we’re already at capacity, with more airlines clamoring to make Provo their destination. The Provo Airport of the future is set to become the Provo International Airport,” Kaufusi said.
Provo Airport Director Brian Torgersen said expansion plans include added apron space for additional aircraft and the potential to accommodate ten gates with separate facilities to accommodate customs and border control. Both Allegiant and Breeze, he added, requested the airport prepare for international travel “requiring our expansion plans sooner than we expected.”

...Construction on the apron will begin in September with the building of the gates starting next July. If all falls into place the new additions — including parking for 10 gates, a new runway and three more jetways — will be in place by summer of 2026, Torgerson said.

It's quite an upgrade, even on what they have now. The terminal's footprint would quadruple in size, the new gates would be on level 2. The whole facility would come in a little over 200,000 square feet. They'll probably break ground in the next few years as they secure the remaining funding.

The plans show a total of 10 gates, 9 with jet bridges. The airport received some funding from the legislature for FY24. The plans also include facilities for international arrivals.

Update - Massive new UTA facility expands on clean air transit

ABC4 News - https://www.abc4.com/news/local-news...n-air-transit/

On May 10, Utah Transit Authority (UTA) opened its state-of-the-art maintenance and fueling facility — the Central Depot District Garage — which will fully accommodate today’s alternative fuel and clean air transit vehicles.

This project, which resulted from three years of meticulous construction work, is expected to create jobs, increase economic growth, and improve Utah’s air quality.

20 TRAX trains getting replaced after UTA awarded $60M grant
The Depot District will replace the 46-year-old Salt Lake Central Bus Garage, which could maintain just 100 buses at a time due to a lack of available space. Now, the new Depot District will provide UTA with additional storage for more vehicles and state-of-the-art maintenance resources.

Upon opening, this massive new facility — covering 118,088 square feet and located at 200 S. 669 W. in Salt Lake City — will be capable of storing and maintaining up to 150 buses with the potential to expand its service to 250 buses as needed...

...In addition to the expanded facilities, the new Depot District will reportedly free up land at the site of the old Salt Lake Central Garage to be used as a potential mixed-use Transit Oriented Development (TOD) to help address the city’s ongoing housing shortage. This redevelopment project extends over 9 acres and is anticipated to bring hundreds of new apartments, shops, offices, green space, public market, and more to an economically challenged neighborhood...

Overall, the project includes a new bus maintenance shop, bus wash, diesel fueling center, administrative offices,
and charging facilities for UTA’s ever-expanding fleet of electric buses and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses.

Celebratory Remarks - This achievement was marked with a press event with representatives Mike Schultz and Kay Christofferson speaking, as well as UTA Board Chair Carlton Christensen, UTA Executive Director Jay Fox, and FTA Region 8 Administrator Cindy Terwilliger.

This is a significant step forward for UTA, Utah, our employees, and most importantly, our riders. A modern, robust, and expanded facility allows us to provide increased reliability and positions us to provide more service. Here’s to Depot District! Here’s to more transit along the Wasatch Front!

I love how close and convenient the airport is to downtown SLC, but is not in the way of allowing for the construction of ever-taller skyscrapers. Also, the landing paths over the suburbs are relatively quiet, and the take-off noisier paths are over the emptier portions of the Great Salt Lake. What a location coup for Salt Lake City.

I've been bored and UTA has been making progress on the proposed 2024 budget and dropping some hints along the way.

As has been mentioned here before UTA, has received a federal grant to the tune of $60 Million to replace half of their original SD Unit fleet. In their 2024 budget UTA is proposing $10 Million to the same SD Unit replacement.

Given the calculated cost of $3 Million per LRV the feds have calculated, the total amount of units initially funded for replacement is 23 (with UTA's $10mil). It's a pretty specific number. There are two generations of SD units in UTA's fleet: SD100 and SD160. Between the two there are 40 units: 23 SD100 and 17 SD160 units. The SD100s are between 3 and 5 years older, it makes sense that UTA is initially securing funding to replace them specifically. I'd bet they ask the legislature or apply for a grant to replace the remaining SD160 units before they take delivery of any new units. I'd hope that by the time an order is placed UTA orders additional units to support an Airport to UofU line.

I'm sure plenty of the people who view this thread already know the difference between an SD100 and SD160, but in case anyone here doesn't here is a photo comparison:

SD100: Has folding doors, some units have been repainted to match newer S70 units.
https://i.imgur.com/Du5Ljrrh.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/BmOhWOOh.jpg

SD160: Pop out sliding doors, newer AC traction system.
https://i.imgur.com/46ahdSCh.jpg

These units still have plenty of life left in them, I wonder if they will be sold to Denver or Sacramento.

Other little notes from the budget:

UTA is planning to have Siemens repair 2 accident-damaged S70s. One of which was involved in a serious derailment in 2018 pictured below. (Photo: KSL)
Side note: To my knowledge the worst LRV repair UTA has had to have Siemens do at their factory was the vehicle involved in the 2016 North Temple derailment, that unit was remanufactured and put back in service on the S-line.

UTA is continuing the Frontrunner locomotive midlife overhaul. Once complete UTA locomotives will meet EPA Tier 1 or Tier 2 emissions standards. UTA's MP36 locomotives may only be 11-16 years old, but several components like the trucks and engine blocks are refurbished from much older locomotives.

UTA is anticipating delivery of the used Coaster BiLevel cars this year which will enable them to begin a midlife overhaul of their own BiLevel cars.

The UTA customer service center located in the old Rio Grande freight hub building at SL Central (not to be confused with the Passenger Depot, subject of the Rio Grande Plan) will be closing on October 2nd. Customer Service will now be located at UTA Meadowbrook. This is the last use of the building, Greyhound has already vacated and water has been shut off. The historic building will likely be torn down in the very immediate future.

Delta is Opening a Second Sky Club® in Salt Lake City in 2025.

Anthony Losanno for the Bulkhead Seat - https://thebulkheadseat.com/delta-is...-city-in-2025/

Quote:

Anthony’s Take: Salt Lake City has been a focus of much investment for Delta and it only makes sense to add a second Sky Club® as its operations continue to grow there.
The airport completed construction of the new 900,000-square-foot Concourse A in September 2020. Concourse A serves Delta exclusively with the carrier occupying all of the 22 gates that are scheduled to open by October 31st. Delta operated over 230 flights from Salt Lake City to around 90 global destinations this summer including added frequencies to Austin, Charlotte, Nashville, Philadelphia, and more. Concourse A has a Sky Club® currently and the new location will complement the gorgeous existing lounge. The new Sky Club® will be located in Concourse B and will provide travelers with access to a more convenient lounge near the B Gates. No word on the Sky Club’s® size or proposed amenities has been released.

The Salt Lake City Tribune reports that Delta employs more than 5,000 people at Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) and it signed a lease extension last year that guarantees it will maintain its hub there until at least 2044. Construction on Concourse B will be fully complete by 2027 and Delta will occupy more than one third of the concourse by that time.

Inland Port Update - Stadler Rail of Switzerland Expanding U.S. Headquarters

https://www.stadlerrail.com/en/about...ler_us_inc/26/
In keeping with Stadler’s growing market share and global expansion, in June 2015, Stadler received an order from the Fort Worth Transportation Authority (FWTA) for 8 new FLIRT model diesel-electric low-floor multiple-unit vehicles for their new TEXRail line. The fact that federal funds were being used for the order made it subject to the Buy America Act, and Stadler quickly found a former Union Pacific plant in Salt Lake City, Utah that was for lease by the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) and was also well suited to the requirements of the TEXRail order. Concurrently, plans also began to build a permanent 230,000 ft2, $50 million state-of-the-art facility on a 62-acre property, just five minutes from the Salt Lake City International Airport...

May 15, 2019 opening ceremonies for Stadler Manufacturing's new U.S. Headquarters
https://www.railway-technology.com/w...er-15thMay.jpg

Contd...This impressive momentum continued with an order from Caltrain for the construction of 16 bi-level electric multiple unit trains in August 2016, and an additional order by the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority of three diesel-electric low floor multiple unit FLIRTS for the Arrow passenger rail service, also known as the Redlands Passenger Rail Project, quickly followed. Prior to these contracts, Stadler began doing business in the US with sales to the New Jersey Transit Authority (NJTA) for the River line in 2002, Capital Metro Transportation Authority (CMTA) in Austin, Texas in 2005, and Denton Country Transportation Authority (DCTA) in 2009. 2014 brought even more success with the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District Authority (eBART) in San Francisco, California purchasing eight GTW model diesel-electric articulated multiple units.

December 30, 2023

"Construction of a new canteen building to include general and private dining areas, kitchen, food serving, storage, and restrooms" Stadler will eventually expand production space from 300K SQFT to 900K SQFT under the terms of a 9.6 million dollar deal with the state.
