820 Olive Street

Last, but definitely not least, is the tallest of the three developments. 820 Olive Street, currently a surface parking lot, would be developed by the Onni Group into a 50-story tower containing 583 residences above 4,500 square feet of ground floor commercial space. Standing 637 feet high, 820 Olive Street would be amongst the tallest residential buildings in the state of California. The tower, which would actually rise on the Hill Street side of the project site, features a five-story podium structure spanning the length of the property. Although the podium does contain an approximately 600-car garage, parking accommodations would screened by residential units on both the Olive and Hill Street sides of the parcel. Residential amenities would include an outdoor pool deck on the seventh level, providing access to two-story townhouse units on the northern side of the property. Exterior materials are listed as concrete, prefinished metal paneling, perforated metal paneling, stone and glass.

As seems to be the case everywhere you look in South Park these days, 820 Olive Street might be joined by another tall neighbor. In addition to Onni's tower already underway next-door, developer Carmel Partners has plans for a 27-story high-rise just across the street. The San Francisco-based firm is already very familiar with the neighborhood, having started construction on the long-stalled G8 development in early 2013. The 700-unit monolith, which will occupy the majority of a full city block, is set to feature a long-awaited Whole Foods Market on its ground floor.

Apparently not but LA really needs more buildings so I hope it's built

Also that top penthouse area looks awesome

colemonkee May 16, 2014 2:27 PM

This one was presented to the DLANC committee a month ago, so we have a fair amount of time before we have an approved tower ready for construction. LA's approval process is quite lengthy. But if Onni is successful with their 32-story tower currently close to topping out - and barring any broader economic catastrophes - it's likely that we'll see some action on this one in the next 6-12 months.

i really hope so this building is awesome

This project's location will really add mass to the skyline. It's good looking design too. .... imo.

caligrad May 20, 2014 5:13 AM

I see this Tower losing 8-10 floors but highly likely it will get built. Onni sees the potential and demand in LA for housing since literally there is a lack of housing in the county, this has a high chance of being built especially if their building right next door does really well.

Zapatan May 20, 2014 8:20 PM

Why would it lose height if there's a lack of housing?

caligrad May 21, 2014 3:27 PM

^^^ I was being a bit sarcastic. There isn't one building proposed in LA that hasn't seen a reduction in height in one shape or form. This building though is probably one of the most real proposals in the city at the moment. Onni is trying to ride the wave while other developers sit back and play the waiting game. Hopefully Onnis other tower next door does really well. if it does than they will be the driving force for most of LAs new residential towers, They already have 4-5 proposed. LA can need all the housing in the world but if a developer can break even or make a marginal profit by slicing off a few floors to cut time and costs, as we have seen before in every major city in the country, they will do it.

Site has been fenced off and the concrete and pavement is being ripped up. It's happening!

I will be cautiously optimistic since there is a very vocal and persistent rumor from a well placed forumer that the economy has tanked, the cycle is over and this person is always right. This person was not named Trump. Maybe. Can neither confirm nor deny.

Nobody is always right and rumors aren't worth the digital ink they're written with.

Hope this is the first good sign for this project.

What's crazy is that once this and Oceanwide Plaza both officially get underway, we'll have 4 buildings over 600 ft. under construction at the same time (Wilshire Grand, Metropolis Tower 4, Oceanwide Tower 1, 820 Olive). That hasn't happened since 1990 when US Bank Tower, Figueroa @ Wilshire, 777 Figueroa and 2 Cal Plaza all may have been under some level of construction at the same time. And would only be the 2nd time in the history of Los Angeles. Considering LA only has 13 buildings over 600 ft. (not counting Wilshire Grand), we're witnessing the second-biggest simultaneous change in the LA skyline ever.

The Century plaza towers look like they could be around 600ft as well so once those get underway in March that could be two more buildings added to the list of 600 footers going up at the same time

They're a little removed from the other four, but the towers in the Century Plaza hotel redevelopment are both supposed to be 46-stories/600-feet tall. That'll make it six in total.

colemonkee Feb 8, 2016 5:27 PM

^ And when those break ground, I'll be able to capture them, as my office is right across the street.

Quixote Feb 9, 2016 4:48 AM

The height is just enough to make up for the "meh" design. At least give us better renderings. Sheesh.

timpdx Feb 9, 2016 5:22 AM

Thought the Century City twin towers at 571ft were the limit in Century City.

King Kill 'em Feb 9, 2016 5:26 AM

The century city towers are a foot shorter than the Yamasaki twins already there. The century city skyline might look kind of flat with the new towers, although it already kind of does.
