San Francisco was full of geographers

Went to San Francisco last week with all the other geographers in the universe for the Association of American Geographers conference. (Any other AAG folks around here?) I didn't come away with a great variety of photos, but I did what I could. I didn't really get much in the way of neighborhood pictures and even spent one three-mile walk without taking any photos at all. But whatever. It was a nice time in a nice city!

Everything but this one is just in chronological order.

OhioGuy Apr 26, 2007 3:46 AM

My area of study at Ohio State was a specialization in the Department of Geography in the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences. So I guess I'm part of the "geography circle". ;)

Great photos btw! :)

Omaharocks Apr 26, 2007 4:29 AM

Hey Pigboy, UW geography represent! I couple of my fellow geography major friends attended, and enjoyed themselves. I wish I could've gone myself. Thanks for the photos!

BigKidD Apr 26, 2007 4:54 AM

Great photos PigBoy. I love the angle of this photo,

The clash of different architectural styles and of course the Bay Bridge.

I want to be part of the geography circle :(

brilliant!+

BTinSF Apr 26, 2007 5:12 AM

Without trying (I'll take your word for that) I think you produced one of the best SF threads I've seen. You do seem to have got lucky with great weather--SF is not always favored with blue skies. But also you seem to have a very good camera and took your shots from unusual places. I'm guessing many of them were from Coit Tower (or at least Telegraph Hill) and some of the others were from an upper floor of a hotel (I think the Marriott). Am I right?

fflint Apr 26, 2007 5:29 AM

Very good photos of SF. Nice job.

sfcity1 Apr 26, 2007 5:31 AM

So this is why I live here. No further comments.

ColDayMan Apr 26, 2007 5:41 AM

Nice!

Love the layering of the bridge, port, and Oakland skyline. The pics of SF are great as well.

mSeattle Apr 26, 2007 8:27 AM

Gorgeous and very impressive density.

cmoonflyer Apr 26, 2007 8:38 AM

I know some of my professors went out there and I was going to go but just didn't get a chance this go-round, maybe next time though :(

ikcyzrteip Apr 26, 2007 12:11 PM

san francisco looks beautiful as always

STLgasm Apr 26, 2007 12:29 PM

Too bad that city is so ugly.

JivecitySTL Apr 26, 2007 1:01 PM

I'd like to wrap San Francisco up and put it in a little box and send it on down the river.

Cory Apr 26, 2007 1:19 PM

Beautiful colors and nice weather.

PigBoy Apr 26, 2007 1:33 PM

Thanks everybody! The AAG conference is great because it's pretty much an excused vacation from school, at least in a geography department. I hope some of you other geography people will make it to next year's in Boston. Do it while you're a student if you can; it's a helluva lot cheaper! (Although frankly it'd be super easy to just wander in without registering, and plenty of people do.)

Yeah, a bunch are from Coit Tower and the other elevated ones are from Hotel Nikko. The conference was at the Hilton next door but there was some overflow into the other hotel.

russbaseball Apr 26, 2007 2:31 PM

great photos!

keninhalifax Apr 26, 2007 3:13 PM

From one geographer to another: excellent photographs!

As a graduate in Geography from San Francisco State, I say you did a marvelous job capturing our city. Like someone else mentioned, one of the best SF threads I've seen!

Yeah this STLgasm and JiveCitySTL are both haters. I actually think they're the same person who has 2 log in names, which BTW is totally lame. Everytime pics of SF are posted he has to post some remark to snipe San Francisco. He clearly has some type of grudge. That's ok if he does but he should keep his negative comments to himself and stay in East St. Louis which is where he's probably from.

fflint Apr 27, 2007 5:27 PM

^Calm down, there, newbie. They were joshing.

KevinFromTexas Apr 27, 2007 5:29 PM

Such an incredible city. Simply beautiful.

Wonderful pictures, thanks!

 Actually, they're brothers, and I'm betting gasm told his bro about this thread of nice pictures of a nice city so jive checked it out. And as for their comments which might have seemed like they were against San Francisco, no. Jive and Gasm are definitely not against it, and, they do have a sense of humor. Something that comes in handy around here. :)

Yeah, we've been thinking of tearing it all down and calling in a decorator, but money's been tight :D

Seriously, though -- amazing pics.

I was there for a couple days at the AAG (represent Denver University woot!) and had a blast...unfortunately didn't have any time to take photos nearly as impressive as those, way to go!

That's cool. Didn't want to start a ruckus. Just found it odd that I always see posts from them dissing SF. It's all good though.

Beautiful pics of a beautiful city. My favorite city in the world.

giovanni sasso May 2, 2007 12:08 PM

it's nice to see some interest (and attendance!) of the AAG conference from college students. i went to the 1999 conference in williamsburg VA and i swear i was one of maybe ten total college students there. i had a blast nerding it up with the founder of mapquest and a CIA cartographer (whose world map i still have hanging on my wall). i wasn't even a geo major or minor -- i would have been but by the time i realized the interest was there i was tired of college and just wanted to get the hell out.

super pictures there. i haven't been to SF in eight years, oi.
