My uncle's death last December has been ruled a manslaughter. That brings 2007's homicide total up to 3.

An off-duty employee at a Simpson Street bar has been taken into custody and charged with manslaughter following the December 2007 death of a 44-year-old man.

Scott Roger James died at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre after he was found collapsed outside the unnamed bar at 1 a.m. on Dec. 13 of last year.

Following a post-mortem of the body, the chief coroner determined a further examination was needed.

The chief coroner's report was then given to the criminal investigations branch of Thunder Bay Police last month, which led to Wednesday's charges.

The accused, who has yet to be named by police, will have his first appearance in court on Thursday.

A 21-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter almost nine months after the death of 44-year-old Scott Roger James.
James died Dec. 13, 2007, at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre after being found collapsed outside a Simpson Street bar just after 1 a.m. on the same day.

Police said James was ejected from the bar that night for “engaging in prohibited activity” inside.

“(James) was asked to leave and was escorted out of the bar by an off-duty bouncer and during this process was injured,” said Det. Sgt. Scott Smith. “Those injuries resulted in his death.”

The man charged worked as a bouncer at the bar.

An initial post-mortem examination showed James had experienced significant internal trauma. The chief coroner ordered a second examination. The Thunder Bay Police Service‘s Criminal Investigations Branch received a final written pathology report late last month.

After consultation with the Crown, James‘s death was determined to be a homicide.

“Because the scientific studies on the cause of death were quite protracted, the charges weren‘t laid until (now),” said Smith, who noted the man taken into custody Wednesday was interviewed in December when police attended the scene at the bar.

The man charged will make his first court appearance today. Police said his name will be released following the appearance.

James‘s death brings the number of homicides that occurred in Thunder Bay in 2007 to three.

Eighteen-year-old Geraldton resident Jordan Achneepineskum was taken by ambulance from the Royal Edward Arms with severe head injuries on Dec. 24 of last year. He later died at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

Garnet Loon was arrested the next day and charged with second-degree murder.

The first was 45-year-old Karla Desrosiers, who was found dead in her apartment on Jan. 20, 2007.

Benedict Arnold Wawia was arrested Mar. 19, 2007, and charged in connection with her death.

He was given a prison term of eight years and seven months for manslaughter in May 2008.

There have been no homicides in Thunder Bay this year.

Even though Murders are down from last year by about 11. Man I gotta tell you, all I hear on the news now is people getting shot or stabbed every other day, its getting pretty bad.

Stated earlier about rather having higher murder rate and much lower overall crime rate...........I agree.
Almost all CDN murders tend to be gang related. In other words keep your nose clean and murder will probably never affect you.

The thing that effects 95% of the population are assaults, BEs, drugs theft all which Vancouver has in spades. I always have felt MUCH safer in Toronto than Vancouver and the stats back me up, Vancouver, by CDN standardss, is a high crime city. BC has always had a higher crime rate much higher than the national average as has all of Western Canada.

Someone was stabbed in Hamilton over the weekend, bringing the total number of homicides this year to 5.

Gun crime is at an all time high in Toronto beating any year by far....even though Toronto is still only at 52 compared to 62 in 2007

There were 10 seperate shootings just in one weekend here....there has been about 25+ seperate shootings in september

just last night 4 people were stabbed at a house party, and the day before that a girl was shot in the leg while she was sleeping, by someone shooting outside...and somone else was shot in the chest in the same area as the girl in Rexdale.

Anyone have the latest numbers for Calgary? I haven't heard of any murders or shootings for about a week now.

Seems lower this year so far this year Flar, a good sign but 0 would be better. 0 would better everywhere but we all know that will never happen unfortunatly.

I believe its still at 28, the most recent one was about 3 weeks back.

I think Hamilton normally has less than 10 murders per year.

Is this really a surprise when Winnipeg has been near the top in murders per capita for the past 15 years. Exactly how small do you think Winnipeg actually is?
