Well, with the wind I don't see them doing much more work today, or the next two days for that matter considering the forecast. Come on mother nature help us out here and cooperate!

NYguy Mar 12, 2010 11:29 PM

Yeah, it was windy, cold, and damp out today. But that was nice compared to what's forecast for the weekend.

^^^ Amazing can't wait till first floor will be done, wonder how will it look like.
One quick question i heard that they don't work on the tower on Saturday's and Sunday's is that true?

Plokoon11 Mar 13, 2010 1:29 AM

It looks like there doing two floors!

2-TOWERS Mar 13, 2010 5:33 AM

Well They Say A Floor A Week So It Seems Like They Are Doing 2 Floors At A Time So My Guess Is It Will Be 2 Weeks For The Double Floor.... Still Will Go Fast......i Will Be In The City In December So I Should See A Major Impact In The Skyline......

To paraphrase Sarah Palin:

'Build baby build!'

;)

Will they now install a new tower crane?

Zensteeldude Mar 13, 2010 5:29 PM

:previous: We should know the answer to that question in a month or so.

Great pics NYGuy.

I see that the "wind frame" design of the office floors allowed them to put up the next section of corner node on the SW . (The mechanical floors are a braced wind frame)

The perimeter steel resists almost all of the wind load and about half of the gravity load (the core takes the rest).

Domamania Mar 13, 2010 8:23 PM

one quick question why is the steel from the office floors are not red like the base floors of the tower?

Zensteeldude Mar 13, 2010 8:33 PM

The red paint is intumescent fire proofing, the unpainted steel well get spray on fire proofing ( basically a layer of cement sprayed onto the steel).

A BLANKET OF INSULATION
Intumescent coatings start turning to insulating foam at a temperature of 300°F - less than a hundred
degrees higher than boiling water. The heat sensitive ingredients in the smooth coating react and froth
up into a foam containing millions of tiny hollow cells. The expansion incredibly rapid. What was once
a smooth, decorative surface turns into a thick protective layer of insulation.

The core steel is unpainted because it well be encased in concrete.

I've seen them working weekends on some towers around town, (440 West 42nd is a recent example), but I haven't seen any weekend activity here.

I'm just waiting for that next section, the one we saw in your diagram. Then we will have arrived..:)

I was in NYC 2 weeks ago and visited this area. Of course it was very sad thinking about what happened here and you could definitely feel something uneasy about everyone walking past, etc.

Am very glad this is now being built and look forward to the day this area goes beyond being a construction site.

MadGnome Mar 14, 2010 4:47 PM

Would the change in fireproofing at this point be because of the steel going below a certain thickness? Or because it's office floors now instead of mechanical floors?

indeed, he did. maybe culwulla needs better protection of the copyright for his diagrams.

Looking over NYguy's photos, you can start to see the true angle change/transition between the base and the office floors. Even with just a few of steel members up.

MadGnome Mar 15, 2010 1:37 AM

The scale of the cranes in that diagram must be way off. Even Red Jr. is tall enough to put the next corner piece up.

It has to do with how much room there is for the insulation. Spray on fireproofing adds about 2 inches to the size of the beam/column. Intumescent paint adds about an 1/8th of an inch.

kenratboy Mar 15, 2010 4:51 AM

This is a very basic question - was this building designed with the metric or imperial system? Obviously we convert figures either way, but are the blue prints imperial or metric?
