Quincy, FL (+Tallahassee)

Quincy is a town of just under 7,000 in the Florida Panhandle, about 20 miles W/NW of the capital city of Tallahassee.

It is the seat of Gadsden County, Florida's only majority African American county.

We've got to get there first... this was a drive from Montgomery, AL to Tampa, FL. Let's take a ride through the deep Deep South.

The long, long, -- l o n g -- drive down around the crook of Florida towards Tampa. Driving into the state this way made it feel as vast and endless as Texas. It really is a huge state.

Beyond just visiting every state (I'm at 43) I decided a while ago that I want to hike in each state. This stroll through the woods in Perry County made Florida my 32nd state hiked in. I got my ass kicked by mosquitoes, so it was a mercifully brief hike.

VIRGINIA: Lynchburg | Petersburg

TENNESSEE: Chattanooga | Knoxville

ALABAMA: Birmingham | Montgomery | Anniston | Talladega

FLORIDA: Tampa

I've got three more cities from earlier in the journey that I'll get around to posting eventually.

Yup. That's Florida.

Nice pictures. That part of Florida looks like the regular South, which I guess isn't a surprise.

Nice pics. It's not everyday you see images of Quincy. I went to college in Tallahassee for five years and drove into Quincy only once to see what was there.

Prahaboheme Jan 7, 2013 4:25 PM

A regular backwater. This could easily be mistaken for Georgia or Alabama, but then so too can areas in Central Florida outside the major metropolitan cities.

Tallahassee is looking good.

Ha. I drove up there once also. Havana was nicer from what I remember.
On the trip back I took a turn down a clay dirt road and swore I went back in time 50 years. It was spooky.

Very southernlike!! I don't believe that Quincy was too far from Okeefenokee Swamp. You want to talk about mosquitoes!!

Actually, the Okeefenokee is about 175 miles to the NE of Quincy.

Georgia / Florida border towns. South Georgia / North Florida is like a state of its own - not what one typically thinks of Georgia nor what one would typically thinks of Florida. Beautiful countryside with small towns, small cities, and bigger cities dotted along the way. I enjoy and love my visits there.
