NEW YORK | South Ferry Plaza | 1,084 FT / 330 M | 75 FLOORS | NEVER BUILT

SOUTH FERRY PLAZA
New York's Postmodern Lighthouse
1,084 Feet/329.8 Meters
75 Floors
Office/Ferry Terminal/Retail/Resturant/Observation
Original Planned Completion: 1987
Fox & Fowle Architects, P.C./Leslie E. Robertson Associates

Would have been the 4th tallest building in New York City at the time, surpassing the Chrysler Building, and would have been the 3rd tallest building in Lower Manhattan behind the World Trade Center.

(From ArchFwa.com)

Frank Williams conceived of the 60-story 1.5 million square foot office tower at the tip of Manhattan as "a metaphor of a lighthouse at the tip of the Island". This architectural design won the invited competition but the real-estate market has stalled the project from moving ahead. The rose granite and glass structure would have risen above a new Staten Island Ferry Terminal and renovated Battery Maritime Building. The Associated Architects are Fox & Fowle. The BMB will be recycled for cultural activities. The tower is topped with an all glass dome that will be illuminated at night. The dome provides public observation decks as well as public restaurants on three levels.

The architects designed a new limestone base for the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, and executed extensive copper restoration on the Battery Maritime Building. The enormous pedestrian activity at the base of the complex was reorganized. Generous public space to accommodate approximately 100,000 ferry and subway commuters that pass through the complex daily. A new waterfront esplanade, linking Battery Park to the Public Plaza has added two additional acres of park space. The new park adds a welcome amenity for the pedestrians in this new South Ferry Plaza complex as well as a gracious exterior arrivals space.

The South Ferry Plaza is one of my favorite never built projects, Its really hard to dislike this project. Its a real shame that it was never built. Dose anyone have any other info on this project?

Yea that would have been a great addition to the skyline, and alot of thought went into it's aesthetics no doubt.

I think its horrible. Looks like the Humana building in Louisville. I like the idea of a building that close to the water (hope we can curb global warming and sea level rising) but I just dont like the design.

it screams dubai for some reason

NYguy Apr 15, 2008 1:28 PM

I remember this one. I think it would have brought a touch of the classic lower Manhattan skyline back.

I made a quick model of it in Sketchup/Google Earth, and it would have been HUGE, a modern Chrysler Building at best. It would have really been Manhattan's Lighthouse.

wow, yeah that one was great. probably the best never built in manhatten.

There was another proposal for the same location. A glassy, boxy tower that had its foot directly in the water.
I couldn't find any rendering on the web...

TANGELD_SLC Jan 9, 2009 11:57 PM

Aw, too bad it wasn't built. It would have been kickass in Manhattan.

scalziand Dec 16, 2009 6:07 AM

This would have been elegant enough to complement the old deco towers, but big enough to compete with the Water Street boxes.

I doubt this is what you're thinking of, but here's another slightly shorter design that I dug up. Sorry for the crap quality.

South Ferry was some sort of design competition. I think the version you are thinking of had a tri-legged form a rose vertically ala Central Plaza in Hong Kong. I think it was designed by Helmut Jahn.

imagine a drunk captain ramming his boat into the base of the tower...

I'd probably be more worried about the boat.

I went and rescanned the renders I posted earlier because they were so crappy:

^Oh god that hurts, it's so postmodern, I love it, man I really wish they built a skyscraper there, right on the water.

plinko Jan 7, 2010 4:06 AM

This was the scheme (entry) by Kohn Pederson Fox. Very similar to their other towers of that era.

nice style... would have been a good companion to the Chrystler building, and considering that, I think I would have preferred this in mid-town.

JDRCRASH May 4, 2010 3:36 PM

At first I thought this would ruin the look of the waterfront, but looking closer, I think the design makes up for it.:)

NYC4Life May 5, 2010 5:57 PM

Excellent design of old and modern. Someone should revive this proposal :-)
