Rumour posted at ss.cn.

- Final design isn't any of the ones we have seen.
- They want it to be taller than Burj Dubai.
- They said it is expected to be 820m, 188 floors
- It is supposed to look like this:

@Vito Corleone, does it look like the front runner design you saw?

PS: I don't believe anything... I don't think it will surpass 550-650m.

I wonder when we will get some confirmation or denial about this 'rumor'... On the one hand that height would be spectacular...on the other hand...it would dwarf the Jin Mao and SWFC, and seriously change the skyline of Pudong. Would that make us really happy?

You're right.
I'd rather have half a dozen 60 to 90 floor-towers than a 188-story monster that would make the other skyscrapers irrelevant.

Just as something to put out there, all of the proposals were in the 500-600m range. I can back this with some findings, mostly new proposals for this project, which is being called "Z3" or "Z3 Tower".

On Adrian Smith's website, I found this under Robert Forest's project experience:

"Z3 Tower
Architectural design for 550 meter supertall tower in Pudong district to complete original Pudong-Shanghai Masterplan, 2006, Shanghai, China"

I also found a new rendering from a different firm, here:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2057/...1b4d964b_b.jpg

and a video of a proposal sent in by some students.

Thats just some of what I found, many more proposals, but pointless to post them as it seems that the city wants a green building, with most not qualifying.

Pandemonious Feb 6, 2008 10:54 PM

^That isn't new. Well, it is newly posted on this forum, but not new for this proposal.

That is the old design for Z3 that SOM did a few years ago before the Shanghai Center competition even took place.

JDRCRASH Feb 7, 2008 6:37 PM

+800 meters? Bullshit. I say it's speculation.

Pandemonious Feb 7, 2008 6:43 PM

^It isn't going to be 800 meters. That is pulled out of someone's ass.

JDRCRASH Feb 7, 2008 7:14 PM

Why make it only taller than Burj; why not make it taller than Al Burj, which is already conducting ground soil tests?
It's going to mean absolutely nothing if Al Burj get's built, which looks like it will.

Pandemonious Feb 7, 2008 10:18 PM

Why make it the tallest at all? The height of this tower will be around 600 m. It will add a nice balance to the skyline at around that height, and still be really tall.

I think it is more important to have a tower that has awesome architecture and engineering, and that despite not being the tallest in the world, will become an icon for Shanghai. This developer for this tower is also in it to make money, which building the WTB is definitely not the best route to go for that. Everyone knows that the top 200m+ of Burj are there just to make it tall, and is unusable space in respect to leasing/selling it to regain the cost to construct it. Even then, the floors 50-100m or so below that point are also very small and not all that economical.

I could be completely wrong, and correct me if so, but if that proposal was a couple of years old, wouldn't SWFC (shown in the renderings) have a circular hole up top?

staff Feb 8, 2008 10:43 AM

^^
The hole design of SWFC changed more than two years ago, I think (2½ iirc).

Shanghai is a city of style. A 600m+ building would take most of that away, I highly doubt they will go taller than that. The whole skyline of Lujiazui is perfect right now. I actually kinda wish this tower gets moved north a bit to seperate the skyline.

^ It won't. I walked past the site today and it's on! All the storefronts on the site have been demolished. It's only a matter of time before we see the final rendering and the hole is dug.

Sweet! Another supertall in Lujiazui.

Well, at least the SWFC won't be the tallest in Shanghai anymore.

Why 'at least'? The SWFC is a magnificent building and certainly deserves the title of Shanghai's tallest.

JDRCRASH Feb 11, 2008 5:10 PM

Don't get me wrong, I like it, but just not as the tallest.

giallo Feb 15, 2008 6:19 AM

I went to the site on February 8th and saw this:

All the storefronts have been demolished

My favourite rooftop patio was at this spot. I'm going to miss it.

Part of the site with the SWFC looming in the background.

It was sad to see the restaurant I once frequented completely destroyed. Here today, gone tomorrow.

I did this in the other thread, but it was taken down, so here it is again:

R.i.p.

JDRCRASH Feb 15, 2008 5:32 PM

So does this mean they're actually building it?
