Baltimore: Harbor Tour

Over a few days this summer, I went around the Baltimore harbor. I went to as many places I could excluding the Inner Harbor just because the Inner Habor is obviously the most photographed area of the city. There is a lot of areas along the harbor that can't be accessed because of all the industry, but I saw some pretty cool places that not too many people see. This is a more unusual harbor tour in that sense. Starts off in some more familiar territory and goes further. Here's what I got! Enjoy

1. That's the Pier homes in the foreground, the new Morgan Stanley in the middle, and Mr. Boh in the distance

37. Harbor Point. This is a very contentious issue right now and development of the site has been in the works for a long, long time. Controversy at the moment stems from the use of tax breaks and subsidies given due to its proximity to Public Housing (Perkins Homes). This is the current proposal

54. Curtis Bay is the water in the middle with Hawkins point in the distance. That elevation is not natural. Highly industrialized area. Hawkins Point was the site of a Superfund completed last year

57. Fort Caroll is an artificial Island in the Potapsco river, technically in Baltimore County, completed in 1850. Interestingly Robert E. Lee designed this hexagonal structure as part of the permanent system/third system, which means the Fort Mchenry wasn't Baltimore's only defense. Used in the Civil War and the Spanish-American war. It was officially abandoned in 1921 and continues to be abandoned.

It's been several years since the last time I walked around Baltimore but I was in the city via car two years ago and was really surprised by how much has been done around the harbor since my previous visit.

Thanks for the photos.

Wow, the harbor looks fantastic. Seems that they're doing a lot of great things there.

Love these photos!

But where is Camden Yards & some pics of the mighty O's?

Too bad about that fort, one would think it could be a neat tourist attraction.

Nightsky Jul 23, 2013 8:08 PM

Very nice harbour area!

Yorkie Jul 24, 2013 12:13 AM

Great too see all the new life brought back to a once industrialized only area....Is that the pedestal for David in pix 77?.....It has been many years since I was there, people do not know of it and the controversy.:tup::???::eek::eek::eek:

I'm surprised no one recognized the structure in 61 with all the hardcore fans ;)

That's what I wish! It was proposed to be put to use a few times but nothing ever happened. I'm determined to get in there one day. And people have! Urban explorers love this!

I'm not familiar with this controversy  google search didn't return any results

Cool tour! I never really thought about it before, but Oakland and Baltimore have some similar characteristics, which came through in some of these shots. A few of these remind me of Jack London Square and of course being a waterfront and port city adds to that too.

fflint Jul 25, 2013 12:53 AM

Cool, it's nice to see Baltimore from different angles

pdxtex Jul 25, 2013 1:38 AM

is pic 61 the building where the squad in the wire sets up shop in season 1? baltimore looks awesome. not sure why ive never been there.

Cirrus Jul 25, 2013 2:18 AM

Great pics! I question the sanity of anyone who isn't charmed by Baltimore.

Well, I mean, Baltimore already has Fort McHenry, which is probably the most famous fort in the country. Elsewhere in Maryland Fort Washington and Fort Frederick are also tourist parks. How many can 1 state support?

LouisianaRush Jul 25, 2013 1:41 PM

Great pictures man. That was a hot weekend to walk around and take shots.

Ex-Ithacan Jul 26, 2013 2:29 PM

Baltimore, and its Harbor, have it all. Great pics (of course), and such diversity of subjects. I like that renovated Ukrainian Church in pic #70 (the golden domes) across from Patterson Park. I'm need to check out that old fire station under the freeway. Thanks for the tour marcus.
