This will be a very slim sliver tower designed by Cetra Ruddy architects.

There are really a bunch of towers planned for 57th Street.

babybackribs2314 Mar 14, 2012 7:19 PM

I just wrote this up,

http://newyorkyimby.blogspot.com/201...kyscraper.html

Quote:

Documents filed with the city reveal that another tower is in the proposal phase along 57th Street. The future building, at 105 West 57th, will contain 51 floors and rise 671' high. Despite the building's height, there will only be 27 apartments! The building is likely to be extremely luxurious, and prices on the finished product are likely to be quite astronomical. 10,000 square feet of the building will also be dedicated to ground-floor retail, with any tenant likely to be quite high-end given the building's prime location.
Another document shows the Hotel Crillon opening here... HMMM!

BBR, that render looks vaguely familiar. Anyone have any idea when we could see a render or even actual movement on site?

THE BIG APPLE Mar 14, 2012 8:43 PM

This the rendering AS OF NOW. I'm sure It'll change.

RobertWalpole Mar 14, 2012 8:55 PM

That's an old rendering. I don't know if it still applies.

 New building permits were filed on 2 May 2012.

sbarn May 3, 2012 12:45 PM

Awesome news! This will be a skinny, skinny tower! I think the design shown is pretty nice. If they do change it, I just hope it doesn't just have blank walls on its sides and a base that doesn't line up with the street wall.

scalziand May 3, 2012 6:56 PM

The new permits have also added a floor; now it's 52 floors.

sbarn May 3, 2012 7:00 PM

This site is remarkably narrow for ~700 ft tower. I think it will be similar to the One Madison Park in dimensions.

^^ Good to know, another 700 footer for NY. I lost count already. :jester:

My druthers, of course; but I would like to see something like how the bottom "slenders out" can be applied to the top.

Upon further observation, I do believe they call that sort of thing "convexity"..................

As it should be. I can remember when 57th Street (at least W. 57th) was just another touristy destination, but its come back as well. It's the hottest block in Manhattan for ultra luxury apartments.

What impact do you think these luxury apartments and condos will have on the UES?

sbarn May 4, 2012 1:46 PM

^^ Not much, I think they're targeting a slightly different market.

Is the UES more "old money"? And by "these luxury apartments and condos" I didn't mean just this building, but One57, and all of the others that have and are springing up.

BStyles May 5, 2012 12:49 PM

The UES consists of that old New York, Cornelius Vanderbilt money(couldn't find a better term to describe it), especially along the many multi-million dollar art-deco structures that line Park Avenue, and the surrounding streets. If I ever became rich out of respect I'd probably move to someplace like One 57, because the UES is reserved for the New Yorkers whose family names helped build the city, one way or another.

The UES is a residential neighborhood; W. 57 is the middle of Midtown and more mixed-use.

UES is the traditional wealth center in NYC.

And there are plenty of luxury condos being built on the UES. Probably more than Midtown. For whatever reason, I don't think we have SSP construction pages, but there's quite a few, especially in the eastern half (Third Ave. and points east).

One example is 127 E. 79, being built by Brodsky Organization, which will be one of the most expensive buildings ever built in NYC. Another is 200 E. 79, which is being built by Skyline Developers, and will also be very high-end. But there's many others.

If you're asking "what's the difference" between a buyer at one of those two E. 79th Street towers and the new towers going up on 57th Street, I would say that (very generally speaking) the E. 79th buildings will target very wealthy families with children (so big, family sized units) and 57th Street will target more internationals.
