Cleveland!!!!

I'm sure that Cleveland has been pretty well-documented here, but I thought I'd share some pictures I took of the city when I was there this week for a few days to watch an Indians game.

The Mall is completely torn up, and it has left a HUGE void and a very deep hole. I was a little disappointed because I was looking forward to seeing it. It appears as though the city is renovating the entire area and its convention centre/medical mart (at least that's what I think is happening; feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, Clevelanders!)

The Warehouse District is great, and it was pretty lively during the evening hours even though it was midweek.

Perhaps I have low standards coming from Hamilton, but Euclid Avenue, and pretty much the entire downtown, really surprised me. I don't know why, but I didn't expect it to be as vibrant as it was. There were a lot of very well-dressed professionals in large groups strolling the sidewalks, dining on East 4th, enjoying the parks, etc. I actually felt out of place in my shorts and sandals. There were also more joggers throughout the downtown core than I think I have ever seen in any other city!

A section to ourselves, a beautiful skyline view, a sunny afternoon ballgame......it doesn't get much better than this.

Cleveland Rocks!!! Cleveland Rocks!!! Cleveland Rocks!!! Clee-ee-eveland Rocks!!!

The warehouses, Key Tower, Arcade, and Greyhound terminal are standouts for me. Great work.

Expat Jul 28, 2011 7:01 PM

Cleveland is a classic beauty. I would love to visit this wonderful city.

edsg25 Jul 28, 2011 11:25 PM

very nice pictures of an interesting city.

but looking at the seats at progressive field, i'm reminded of how all those retro ballparks that came along after baltimore's camden yards that were supposed to keep the fans coming didn't (as one might have expected) work out that way. all these cities with these new parks, mainly at tax payers expense, and after the novelty wears off, they don't deliver.

glowrock Jul 28, 2011 11:31 PM

Excellent work! I'm thinking of heading out to Cleveland this weekend myself, given that it's only a bit over 2 hours from Pittsburgh. Gotta check out The Arcade, it looks incredible!

Oh yes, and I need to see if I can get a reservation at Lola! (Iron Chef Michael Symon's flagship restaurant)

Don't forget the Indians had a then record over 400 consecutive sell outs when they opened progressive field. Also, the old stadium was a dump...in particular for baseball.

tdawg Jul 29, 2011 1:35 AM

very beautiful and surprising. That greyhound bus terminal is too die for!

pj3000 Jul 29, 2011 1:57 AM

Very nice. Cleveland is a great city. So many beautiful buildings downtown.

RobertWalpole Jul 29, 2011 2:00 AM

Pretty nice.

We definitely do not get enough Cleveland here... thanks for these great pics. I would love to see some outer neighborhoods of the city as well...

You better contact MayDay if you go. He'll get pissed if you don't.

Great shots.

MayDay Jul 29, 2011 3:01 AM

^Oh, pish posh - sure, I'd rather someone ask me for advice instead of dining at the Hard Rock but I'm not going to lose sleep over it. Anyway, glowrock - shoot me a PM if you'd like.

MPK - you really have a great eye when it comes to angles/perspective. This shot, among others, is just brilliant:

Cleveland has more character and beautiful architecture in one block than the entire Silicon Valley/San Jose area has!

Working in the tech industry, it makes me so mad that most tech Co.s will only hire in that boring, soulless, overpriced swamp, than open up offices and jobs in BEAUTIFUL cities with old classic grandeur like Cleveland.

Grrrr

Evergrey Jul 29, 2011 4:02 AM

thread of the year

pip Jul 29, 2011 4:39 AM

wow Cleveland has some grand old buildings. I really like that outdoor seating area that is blocked off to traffic. Great pictures.

Kingofthehill Jul 29, 2011 5:02 AM

so that's what cleveland looks like! i can't help but think how awesome cleveland and its peer cities would be if its college grads didn't all move to nyc/dc/chicago upon graduation.

ShadowMaster Jul 29, 2011 7:12 AM

Wonderful! Cleveland's core has plenty to show, a lot of old beauties too.

I hope we will continue to see more of Cleveland around these parts. Nabes like Ohio City and more. Honestly, I am only familiar with downtown Cleveland and Ohio City. What are some other areas we as a community here at SSP would like to see ?

flar Jul 29, 2011 12:28 PM

Great tour of an underrated city

STLgasm Jul 29, 2011 12:51 PM

Downtown Cleveland has some hellacious bones, great photos!

Man I gotta get up there, now is the perfect time. The triple digit heat is drive us riff raff as they say in Minneapolis north.
