What would you call our new LRT system?

Since we wanted a light subway, we called it metrO. What about yours?

O-Train

lrt's friend Jan 15, 2008 8:55 PM

If we ever build a line to Scotiabank Place, the trains on that line should be called Senatrains. ;)

At the rate things are going right now... NO-Train

Kitchissippi Jan 15, 2008 10:51 PM

Since the funding for this LRT project seems to be susceptible to pork-barrel politics, maybe we should call it the "Hog's Back" :) -- it goes right by it!

Had the original Chiarelli NSLRT happened, it could have been "Chia-Rail" :haha: we could have stolen the chia pet jingle: "choo, choo, choo, Chia!"

I agree. Don't count your chickens before they hatch.

lrt's friend Jan 16, 2008 1:49 AM

well, the hens haven't even laid the eggs yet.

Aylmer Jan 16, 2008 1:50 AM

But when they do, they will get the 200mil$ that the farmer is waving infront of it's face.

:omg: :lmao:

Think about how green-friendly those Chia-Rail trains would be with all that greenery growing off the top of them.

Now all we can hope for is for some green to sprout out of Larry O'Brien's head.

OMG, that is so funny! I read that before you edited it and that is exactly what I was thinking!

My God! It's the Grinch who stole Light Rail!

lrt's friend Jan 17, 2008 2:27 PM

Thank god Christmas is past. I wouldn't want that under my tree.

Isn't it weird that there's still a difference in naming between LRT and the O-Train? What is like this in the first project? When was the name selected?

Mille Sabords Mar 12, 2008 1:58 PM

I like MetrO. It's easy to say in both languages and it doesn't have the semantic limitation of "subway", which would imply that the entire system is underground. What I'd stay away from is "LRT" or even "O-Train". The term LRT is almost an apology for being a rail system (light!). Most international visitors would know right away what "MetrO" is but most would be stumped by the term LRT (you have to understand English and be well-versed in urban-planningese to even know what the acronym stands for).

As for O-Train, I always thought it was a stop-gap name. It's an imitation of Calgary's C-Train, it's a somewhat catchy but vague term (what the hell's an O-Train?) and it doesn't translate well (le train en forme de O?)

Bring on the MetrO !!

the capital urbanite Mar 12, 2008 2:59 PM

ummm...the "Transitway"?!

harls Mar 12, 2008 3:04 PM

I like MetrO too.. clever.

O-train isn't that bad either.

What does Washington DC call their system? Or other world capitals? Maybe we could borrow some ideas..

Washington Metro :). Most countries call it a metro system. Even in other languages.

I would definitely like to see new bilingual names established for our system.

Bus - Normal bus route
O-Bus - BRT route on the Transitway or dedicated corridor
O-Tram - Streetcar system
O-Train - Suburban train system
metrO - Well, metro system

What I love about Toronto and Montréal's systems, it's the branding. When you get in a tunnel or a store, you can easily recognise their subway's system logo. I really would like to see a strong branding here too.
