They will be horizontally right across the way - mere feet away - from where those workers and guests perished, busboys and businessmen alike, innocents at that ill-fated early morning Windows on the World breakfast, not a single one who escaped, 1000 feet up, at the very top of the World Trade Center, trapped, no way out, no way up, no way down, the sheer prolonged hour-long anguish and agony of how they died...

All this will no doubt haunt and infuse the vicinity, the site, the atmosphere. All this will shriek and scream in the howling winds and tear-filled rains, all this will scar the ghostly clouds and float in the gloom of enveloping fog, all this will stain every blood red Jersey sunset, all this will remind us of the pulverized dust of their remains, forever filling the very air itself....

In respect, in their memory, to maintain our own dignity, please - let's not make this Observatory into a tourist mini-Disneyland.
This is forever not only a graveyard,
but a gruesome murder scene that can’t be erased or forgotten."

I understand that for some people, it will always be "too soon", or they have their reasons for not wanting to go down there- wounds that never seem to heal. But how long must the rest of us defer to that type of thinking? How long must the rest of us hold ourselves back, and are all of us who feel that going back up there is essential to our own healing somehow disrespectful? We have the memorial plaza and fountains for reflection, as well as the museum. But we can't wallow in collective grief forever, sooner or later we need to wipe away our tears and get on with the business of living. Surely the people we lost wouldn't want us to be sad forever.

Oh, here's the link to the article:
http://www.timeout.com/newyork/blog/...04-08T21:26:41

this is 2015. 1 WTC isn't holy ground as people sometimes refer to 'ground zero' ( :irked: ) as. Just as an example, parents will be bringing their kids to the observatory to see the view, not to teach them something they wouldn't understand. The 'tourist Mini-Disneyland' environment is inevitable. Yeah, 9/11 happened here. If you're a morbid person stuck on a past event you could view an active place of business and trade as a graveyard forever, but I most certainly prefer not to.

NewYorker2009 Apr 10, 2015 12:25 PM

It doesn't matter if it's 2015 or 2001, the families who lost people that day will always be reminded of 9/11 for as long as they live. You never get over that.

The Port Authority wants this to be a business center again but the memorial and museum are there to help people reflect and remember the past.

For those who didn't lose loved ones it will be a lot easier to visit this observation deck. I think the people did want all this to be rebuilt, to have a Tower that featured an observation deck and restaurant just as the originals did. They wanted that icon to return to Lower Manhattan after the Twin Towers left such a tremendous void. One WTC helped fill that void. It took $4B but we made it to this point to see this all open once again since 9/10/01.

Amanita Apr 10, 2015 6:29 PM

^I would never tell those people to "get over it", or shame them for not wanting to go to the WTC. But I do wish that some of them would stop berating and shaming those of us who feel a real need to pick up where the people we lost left off.

In all fairness, people need to respect each others wishes. If they want to live in the past and reminisce on the old Towers that's great. For those who want to accept the new Tower and look forward to the future that's great too. Some people still can't accept what happened there.

Perhaps once the new WTC is complete and they visit it, then they will accept it and understand just how difficult it was to rebuild it. One WTC will be a great attraction for tourists. Just look how popular the 9/11 memorial and museum are. One WTC will be just as popular if not more than the original WTC observation deck. 3 observatory levels, doesn't get any better than that.

I still wish there was an outdoor deck like the South Tower had, but I think this will be good enough.

Hey, I noticed on earth cam that they are staring to clean the facade of the top of the tower, look like they are getting ready for the observation deck opening.

chris08876 Apr 15, 2015 11:47 PM

I walked by the site the other day and theres a nice sign and everything with the "observatory" listed above the doorway. The site is about to get a lot busier with all of the visitors. Next to the ESB, this will probably be the next biggest spot for an observation deck.

Probably the best vantage points for now or in the when it opens:

1) Top of the Rock
2) 1WTC
3) ESB

Although when the Hudson Yards deck opens, and I believe Vanderbilt, we will see which ones offers the most bang for the buck.

What I have noticed in general are the big efforts for the city to increase tourism. Everything from cleaning to trying to draw more crowds via parades and what not. Lately been seeing more of that then usual. Theres always something going on, but its been increasing.

I don't think so, since the video only shows up to the construction of 1 WTC.

I did notice some historical mistakes though. For example, the Equitable Building appears by 1892 (actual construction 1913-1915) and 14 Wall Street by 1903 (actual construction 1910-1914) but overall it looks very well done.

I hope it's not too nauseating looking at images of flying around mostly horizontally while descending at a constant rate. When the car is re-inserted back into the tower that might really throw off some people's inner ear.

I agree. It amazes me that after several years you can STILL see the glass put in after the freight elevators were removed on opposite sides of the building. Just because of the dirt on the surrounding windows.

A First Look at the Freedom Tower’s One World Observatory
Offering vistas previously limited to photographs from helicopters.

Video screens mounted under the floor show live images from outdoor cameras.

By EDWARD ROTHSTEIN
May 26, 2015

Quote:

The first time I visit—propelled upward a quarter of a mile in an elevator to One World Observatory—it is clear that something momentous is being promised. The observatory, which opens on May 29 at One World Trade Center, calls these five elevators “Sky Pods.” They are enclosed with three walls lined with floor-to-ceiling LED screens so bright and crisp, they could be windows on lower Manhattan. But as we whoosh from the bedrock to the 102nd floor in 47 seconds, instead of seeing the cityscape receding below, we see time-lapse images representing 500 years of history. Lenape wigwams and longhouses give way to early Dutch settlements, and onward: the growth of Wall Street, the evolution of the Battery, the proliferation of skyscrapers and the sounds of contemporary life. For a few seconds, as decades of the 20th century race by, one of the World Trade Center towers fills the eastward screen, then suddenly disappears.

There is no intention here to mourn the destruction; that is reserved for ground level for the 9/11 memorial and museum. Here we are in a building meant to replace those destroyed towers; the preoccupation is not with the past, but the present.

So after leaving the Sky Pod, you enter a long, narrow and high-ceilinged room. One wall is a composite of screens, sparkling with prismatic light, echoing the sliced reflective geometry of the new tower. Then comes a thumping two-minute video paean to New York—“dynamic, diverse and ever-changing”—a kaleidoscope of city life. “Prepare,” we are also told, “to see forever.”

As the music reaches a climax, the screens in the darkened room begin to rise. On my first visit, as the screens lift, a wall of windows begins to let in a wash of light. We look outward. And we see—nothing, a uniform whiteness. When we are ushered into the circular observatory wrapped around the building, allowing a 360-degree survey of the cityscape through two-story-high windows, they still show an unbroken blankness. The building is cloaked in mist and rain.

There are compensations for such occasions, including four guides who are called “global ambassadors.” Each is stationed at the center of a ring of HD video screens that respond to the guide’s gestures, offering visitors high-tech surveys of the city. For a fee, a tablet is available that provides an interactive survey of the surrounding landmarks. There are also three dining areas. And a gift shop. But some significant portion of the expected three million to four million annual visitors are bound to be stymied by weather and may not be able to try again. That is unfortunate.

Because when I return the next day, the cinematic unveiling reveals, through the windows, a magnificent north-facing aerial view of a great city. From the top of the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, New York looks as it has only been seen in photographs from helicopters; you can note its contours and contortions, its areas of thrust and repose, the way its harbor and rivers still pose as its lifeline, though it now has uncountable pulsing arteries.

The observatory will, I think, quickly establish itself as a premier tourist stop, offering something not easily found, even at other observation points. The company operating it, Legends, which has experience managing popular spectacles, is selling timed adult tickets for $32 (with an additional $15 for the tablet); up to a thousand visitors an hour can be accommodated. (Hettema Group was the lead designer, with features created by Local Projects, Blur Studios and Mouse Trap. MADGI was the lead architect.)
