Homicides in prisons don't count toward the city's overall homicide rate. Crimes committed in prisons in general are treated differently for statistical purposes than crimes committed outside of them. Assaults and rapes in prisons don't count toward a city's statistics either.
Part of it might be that the prisons are policed by correctional officers (except in certain situations when police backup is requested, like the prison riot in Thunder Bay in January), while the rest of the community is policed by a police force, and the statistics StatCan uses are based on those submitted by police forces, not corrections officers. |
Québec City is still at 0. Over 12 months since our last murder.
We also have a federal prison (Donnacona) within the Metropolitan area. But I haven't noticed a lot of murders taking place there. http://news.gc.ca/web/article-en.do?nid=885009 I think vid is right, it is a question of policing, there is nothing Montreal's police force can do to reduce crime in the Bordeaux prison. Here is an update on the murder (in French, sorry) - http://ici.radio-canada.ca/regions/M...son-cote.shtml Also, Kwoldtimer - the media's coverage of the mother has been far more unseemly. And I am sure the media have been trying to make a link. Victim blaming for sure. |
Pretty quiet June for murders, especially for females.

FYI a Somali man has died after a "rough arrest" by Ottawa police. It happened on Sunday morning. He was unarmed and had mental health issues. The story is still developing. There is some video of the incident on Youtube if you look for it.

If that's true that would be #2 for the St. John's area this year. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Copz83mXYAAe7Qc.jpg |
Looks like it is #2, Marty.
And a stabbing in Paradise that may turn into #3 yet, fingers crossed not. http://i.imgur.com/J8cqzvI.png (All of these town names - Kelligrews, Seal Cove - are just the former towns that amalgamated to form Conception Bay South, our largest suburban municipality. The old town names are still used as geographic references. Kelligrews is close to the Dominion; Seal Cove is where the college is, etc. They're all connected in an unbroken chain of the very worst of suburbia). |

I lived in Washington DC for a brief time a little over 25 years ago, and the local newspaper used to keep a running tally of the number of murders on a daily basis, totalling them up to the "number of murders so far this year is "x". On average, in DC alone (population about 600,000), there averaged about two murders per day with roughly 650-700 murders per year (mostly in the southeast of the city). At this rate, the District of Columbia would have over twice as many murders each year as the entire country of Canada!!! |
D.C. has recorded 70 homicides so far this year.
|
Toronto is at 40 homicides after a spurt of violence over the last few days in which 6 people were shot (1 fatally) and 5 were stabbed (1 fatally).

Despite this, a friend of mine was nearly caught up in a random gun incident when he got off the metro stop closest to the AFIP. |

Looks like less murders this July than 2015

Toronto is at 44 with 26 homicides by gun. Up from previous years but down by quite a bit from mid to late 2000's.
The weird thing is gun violence and shootings are way up compared to any year in history. So far Toronto has had 270 shootings with 370 victims. Even though it's still only August it has already surpassed any full calendar year in the past other than last year 2015. 2015 had 186 shootings at this point with 294 victims. The whole year ended with 282 shootings and 425 victims. |
DRBGQ.........
