GDP - World's Metro Areas

Since 2008 I've been organizing GDP tables for American and Brazilian metro areas as data are easy to obtain and sensible definitions are possible to be established.

Anyway, here the last edition of the ranking, with all the US and Brazilian metro areas over 500,000 inh. Data coming from BEA (US) and IBGE (Brazil). As definitions I used CSA for the US and for Brazilians they might be found here.

2011

Country -- GDP 2011 (US$) -- Pop. 2011

USA --- 15.075.675.000.000 --- 311.591.917

Be careful this kind of subject can quickly deteriorate.

For European cities, this is rather a list of the GDP of the region around the city than the metropolitan area.
Rhein Rurh Figures are for the whole North Rhine-Westphalia lander, London figure is for the whole South East corner of England
Naples figures is for the whole Campania region, Rome figure for the whole Lazio region, Milan figure are for the whole Lombardy region.
Some cities have region that are approximately near the size of the metropolitan like Madrid or Paris but most have not.
It is better to use data on a lower administrative division like the Provinces for Italy or counties for UK. It would lead to much accurate estimation.

Note that we already have a thread about that. ;)

Here is the link: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=206907

There are no 2011 data for most European metro areas, because Eurostat hasn't published 2011 regional GDPs yet, so Yuriandrade's figures for most European metro areas are essentially guesstimates. The figures below, on the other hand, are official figures published by Eurostat and other statistical offices.

All maps are at the same scale.

Minato, note that I collect the figures and do the definitions. I didn't pick up ready numbers. Therefore, as I stated in my first post, only US and Brazilian are meant to be compared (plus others with sensible definitions).

I know your table. It's interesting but features only handful areas and is not as comprehensive as mine. Also, there are some very problematic metro definitions (just compare Moscow and São Paulo).

Well for example there exist no 2011 GDP figures for British regions/counties yet, so your London figure is only a guesstimate. Eurostat will publish regional 2011 GDP figures only next month or in March (some countries like France or Germany have already published their regional 2011 GDP figures, but not the UK, and I believe also not Italy). And as Minato Ku said, you take entire states (North-Rhine Westphalia) or entire swathes of a country (the south-eastern corner of England), which can't in any way be described as metro areas. It would be like lumping together the GDPs of everything from DC to Boston and describing it as a "metro area".

We've already had this discussion. Most of Moscow Oblast is essentially forests and bogland. The area where urbanization and industry is concentrated is in Moscow proper and immediately around it, i.e. an area not larger than the São Paulo metro area as pictured on the map.

I've already prepared the US part of 2012's list. Lots of changing as US Census Bureau changed metro definitions:

I've addressed this issue. Only US and Brazilian are meant to be called metro areas in the strict sense. The others might or might not.

We've already had this discussion. Most of Moscow Oblast is essentially forests and bogland. The area where urbanization and industry is concentrated is in Moscow proper and immediately around it, i.e. an area not larger than the São Paulo metro area as pictured on the map.

By your definition, Moscow area is 7 times larger than São Paulo which show clearly they're not comparable. You said it's only forests, but it doubles Moscow's population. Your definition of São Paulo metro area, today, don't even comprises the whole urban area. I guess you just picked up official definitions, that will never be changed as it has its meaning by this point.

New Brisavoine Jan 16, 2014 10:39 AM

There, to illustrate. More than 95% of Moscow's GDP is contained within the red circle. The rest is peanuts.

Here, I've assumed the rest outside of the red circle produces exactly 5% of the yellow area's GDP, i.e. $20.3 bn in 2010, which is very generous for those forests, bogland, and derelict towns. The City of Moscow proper had a GDP of $332.8 bn in 2010, and another $52.5 bn was produced in the suburbs within the red circle if we assume $20.3 bn outside the red circle.

Brisavoine, I actually don't have issues on Moscow as I'm fond of broader definitions (on the line with US CSAs) and I know it's impossible to slice Moscow Oblast.

The thing is, your definitions on Brazilian cities are too restrictive and arbitrary. I understand, as you're not familiar with, you feel more confortable to stick with ready stuff. I'm just pointing out they're not comparable with such definitions.

Who said I'm not familiar with Brazilian cities? I've got family both in Rio (Barra da Tijuca) and São Paulo (Vila Mariana). ;)

world's CSAs

yuriandrade, you should combine Washington DC and Baltimore because they are the same CSA

Well, there 645 municipalities in São Paulo state. 39 on the official metro area and 64 in mine definition, which is comparable to the US MSAs. So it get confusing to you. As I said, you might want to expand your definitions to make them comparable. :)

I love CSA definitions, and even though commute figures aren't easily available elsewhere, I try to emulate them (although in a more restrictive way) on Brazilian areas.

Yes, I know. I left them apart as Baltimore is too important on its own and I prefer to have data for it. To Washington, I added all the other MSAs of the CSA, minus the Pennsylvania one as it wouldn't make sense as Baltimore was left out.

Until 2011, you can see I did the same with Providence. But as we had the 2012's enlargement, I decided it was time to merge it with Boston.

This is where you're incoherent. Santos is as far from Praça da Sé as Baltimore is from Capitol Hill, yet you include Santos in your definition of the São Paulo metro area, but exclude Baltimore from the Washington DC metro area. Not logical.

Personally I've included Baltimore in the Washington DC metro area, because both urbanized areas practically touch each other, and car commute rates in the US are extremely high. On the other hand, I've not included Santos in the São Paulo metro area, because Santos is neatly separated from the São Paulo urbanized area by a mountain range, and motorization rate in Brazil is much lower than in the US, hence less long-distance commuting.

I regard Washington and Baltimore as a single multipolar metro area. The only reason I bring they separated in my list is they're historically distinct metro areas, with very distinct economic base and people might want to see separated figures for each one of them. And if someone is interested in the Washington-Baltimore CSA, he can always add them together. Quite easy.

On the other hand, although a traditional city, Santos is 25 times smaller than São Paulo. So there's no reason to keep them separated.

As I said, to me, Washington-Baltimore = metro area. São Paulo metro area has almost 24 million people (2013) against 9 million from the American one. So it's only natural São Paulo to be bigger.

In any case, my definition of São Paulo metro area is extremely compact (12,500 km²), way smaller than Washington-Baltimore CSA. It includes the official metro area plus the neighbouring regions of Santos (south), Jundiaí and Atibaia (north) and São Roque (west). That's São Paulo de facto metro area and it's actually comparable to the US MSAs, not CSAs. About commute, São Paulo and Santos are linked for two highways with ten lanes each. Motorization rates (cars only) in the area is about to reach 500/1,000 inh.

Today, using the official São Paulo metro area as the definition for the actual metro area is almost as absurd as using Greater London to define London metro area.

I couldn't call Bavaria Munich. :D

Let's wait for the Eurostats for smaller units. Then, I'll redraw some European areas.

I wonder what the GDP is of the whole bosh-wash corridor is?

Minato Ku Jan 16, 2014 9:14 PM

One word "huge".
Take Boston, Hartford, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, the largest cities and you have a GDP above $3,150 billion.
