We're up to 13 in Edmonton. I'll be lucky to make it to work tomorrow without being homicided.

The current rate is unfortunate thats for sure. But the City of Edmonton will probably end 2011 with the same average number of homicides as the last 5 years. About 25 to 30. Hey whats a good Kevlar vest going for these days?

Exactly... plus if you look at them they are almost entirely 'known' crimes which does not excuse a problem, but does not really pose public safety concerns per se.
That said, we need to address some underlying social issues in this City and Country. |

EDM may not keep up this pace (hopefully), but 13 in just over 2 months is insane. Side note, I just read that a 19yo Montreal homicide victim in 09' was murdered because he "crosstagged" his killer. So they smashed his head with a brick and dumped him in the river. What a world eh. link http://www.montrealgazette.com/news/...263/story.html |

Now that I think of it, they are in Thunder Bay, too. A lot of our homicides happen between September and April. Probably because a lot of people are inside and get into fights with each other more; most of our homicides are domestic disputes that happen in private homes. Outdoor crimes peak in summer. Overall, the crimes on our crime map have dropped to as low as 50 in a two week period at times, compared to almost 200 over a two week period in the summer.
|
Actually that makes sense that domestic homicides peak in the winter, good point. We get more overall homicides in the summer though. About half of them are after bars close or so it seems.
We're at 9. Man stabbed his gf in HoMa. |
Timmins is at one, in a case involving two people from Thunder Bay.
And Thunder Bay is also at one, in a case involving six people from Thunder Bay. In my neighbourhood as well, like most of our other murders. In Timmins they call it "a deceased male party". In Thunder Bay we call it "a murder victim". We're so blasé. |
Ottawa is currently at 3, Gatineau at 0. The last two Ottawa murders were on March 10 in Fisher Heights (domestic dispute) and this past Friday in Orleans (youth party). The first one was on New Year's Day near Rockliffe Park (I think it was at a party also). There was also a near-murder domestic case in Kanata a couple of weeks ago.

Crazy that William Bicknell that escaped on a day pass from a guard was finally caught about 15 minutes from where I live. The guy was 6 foot 6 500 pounds and a convicted murderer who was being escorted by one unarmed guard. The guy was on the loose and took an elderly woman in Sexsmith hostage for 6 hours. Don't know who was in charge of that but some serious missteps on the part of the prison
