500 N LSD is ~500' tall, and this looks considerably taller perhaps 250'-350' taller (hard to be sure with perspective), so at least there's that........

CHICAGO | 451 East Grand (AM Stern) | ~800 FT | 67 FLOORS | PRO

Looks 800ft~ to me, hopefully Reilly saw a doctor to surgically get his head out of his ass so he can get this building approved.

I really like this building, as long as they use the right materials.

This is shaping up to be a really great month.

^^^ I think we can all agree that we expected this. The design certainly is similar to 30 Park Place in NYC.

Notyrview Jul 17, 2014 9:54 PM

Looks like we have a mega turd on our hands! Very fancy! LAWL

Personally, I like it; the massing and articulation are relatively elegant, compared to 55 E. Eire, and the AMLI monstrosity that went up a few months ago in River North. It's a nice little foil to it's immediate neighbors.

let the shit storm of design criticism ensue!

I like it people here rag on pomo but I think when done right it can be really nice. I love Park Tower and the NBC building for example.....

XIII Jul 17, 2014 11:06 PM

In a complete vacuum, I'd say this is a waste of development. It looks like you took "new york nouveau rich" and tried to graft it to Chicago.

but...

Given the context of the area; it adds some good variety to the blue boxes, it stands out in height, it may play off of the NBC tower and the combination of this and the Gang building would add to the "gateway" effect of the river.

Hell, if the spire gets built, this would still make for good contrast.

Pomo is generally crap, but I'm ok with this, especially if they light it well at night (think Palmolive building)

Skyguy_7 Jul 17, 2014 11:43 PM

^Well said, XIII. This is not bad at all. Didn't expect it to be oriented E-W. At first glance, it reminds me of 900 N Michigan, which is relatively nearby. The two will play well together when viewed from afar. I also particularly like the high-floor rooftop terraces. Can't wait for a high res render!

rgolch Jul 17, 2014 11:48 PM

I think it looks pretty elegant. And Streetville could use some height and more density. This tower along with it's park are a great bit of news, and it sounds like it has a great chance of being built (save R-tard alderman issues).

Kngkyle Jul 17, 2014 11:54 PM

First impression: I like it. I hope the glass color is more green than blue - looks greenish on the render. Green glass with white stone.

Another interesting tidbit from the tribune article about 500 N LSD:

Quote:

Related’s parcel is across the street from 500 Lake Shore Drive, a luxury apartment high-rise it completed last year and is 99 percent leased, according to Tricia Van Horn, a company spokeswoman.
Good to see it's all filled.

This exactly. this part of Streeterville at night is bland. if the tower lights up at night like the Palmolive building or the NBC Tower, it would really brighten up the area.

Is it too early to start a separate thread for this building?

Its never too early! especially with a building with this height, it would be good to get the news all in one place. this is very exciting for Chicago! first Jeane Gang, now this! hope they can get this off the ground. when do you think we will see this tower on the database?

the urban politician Jul 18, 2014 1:15 AM

I'm all for a new thread for the Related project. This one depends 100% on the materials. If it's the usual shit we've seen over the years, it'll be a disaster. But lets cross our fingers

Chi-Sky21 Jul 18, 2014 2:01 AM

It looks like the top will light up pretty nice...the very top part almost reminds me of a lighthouse. That could be lit up pretty bright.

North Pier or 480 N. LSD is 580', so this one looks to be about 700'.

The Canyon Ranch proposal from LR/Related several years back was about 64 floors and was to be 720'.

That'd be my estimation too.

This is shaping up to be a nice little chunk of the city. I hate to say it, but if the Spire is not meant to be, I hope it doesn't drag on forever. I know there's a lot of mistrust of Related, but it they took that site seriously with two tall towers, that area would be really impressive (presuming the Wanda tower and Stern tower get built).

Yea true but the related towers have minimal facade design, just look at 111 west wacker. i just want to know if the spire will be built or not, the sooner i know, the sooner i can stop crying :haha:

hawainpanda Jul 18, 2014 2:58 AM

IMO this is a nice change from all the glass buildings common in streeterville....IMO if its 67 floors its height will prob be greater than 700. I hope this doesn't impeded the spire either
