Los Angeles' Melrose Avenue

The weather was really nice today (Sunday 3.28.2010) and I decided to take random pictures of my walk down

I assume this billboard has something to do with the recent Persian New Year (Nowrooz).

Worked my way over to the Melrose Trading Post.

Then I started walking down Melrose...

The Groundlings is an improv troupe based here in LA. My understanding is that it's also an actual standup comedy school. Some of its many notable alumni include Jon Lovitz, Kathy Griffin, Lisa Kudrow and Mike Myers.

First I heard the sirens. Then I saw two fire trucks pull up. I didn't see any fire, though.

This isn't on Melrose but it's still in Hollywood. It's one of the nicer pet hotels I've seen, at least from the outside.

i like your pics - you get a good feel for the place when looking at them

in saying that, i never felt 'right' when i was there - it seemed to be full of really phoney people (not all obviously).

i hope no one takes this comment personally

Cool stuff! Thanks for sharing!

Great pictures! The only time I've actually shopped on Melrose was before I even moved to Los Angeles back in the late 80's. From memory the Ave attracts a very young crowd of Kids in their teens and very young adults in their late teens/early 20's, but your pictures seem to indicate a crowd a little older than it used to be.

Great set of photos! Last time I was on Melrose a few months ago it seemed like the recession was taking its toll. Judging from your photos, things are starting to pick up again!

Great shots!

Very cool tour! I really like the hip, edgy vibe of Melrose. It could only exist in LA.

It depends on where you go.

Very Nice Pics, Thanks!

Good pics and it looks like a very funky street with interesting shops!

I go into L.A. over on Melrose to get my hair cut often. The last time I was there about a month ago, it still look a shabby to me. I was kinda of surprised as I normally don't go walking around. Just so happened my barber was running late, so I walked around the avenue for about 45 mins, and seen a lot of empty store fronts.

Anyway sopas ej nice thread, thanks for sharing.

Love the west side. Thanks for the great photos!

Quixote Mar 29, 2010 11:34 PM

^ LOL, that stretch of Melrose is certainly not part of the Westside. I'm not sure if it should be classified as Hollywood or the Fairfax District. It could even be its own neighborhood. Whatever it is, it definitely isn't the Westside.

sopas ej Mar 30, 2010 1:48 AM

Thanks for all the comments!

Yeah, Melrose is definitely not on the Westside. I've mentioned this before, but the "Westside" has always meant anything west of Beverly Hills; so yes, even the Beverly Center isn't on the Westside. I think the "Westside" also extends north to Mulholland (anything north of that is "the Valley"); where I've had trouble is defining the southern border of the Westside. Some say LAX is part of the Westside, but I've always considered it more South Bay-centric. I've always considered this section of Melrose to be the extreme southern edge of Hollywood, and it's definitely adjacent to the Fairfax District.

I last walked around Melrose last fall, and yes, I do remember vacant storefronts and a somewhat rundown look, but when I took these pictures it seems that it's picked up since then, though there are still a number of vacant commercial spaces. And this was actually my first time going to the Melrose Trading Post.

dktshb, back when I hung out here in the 80s, it did seem like more teens (myself included) and tweens hung out here back then (plus the fact that Fairfax High School is right there, that probably adds in the teen factor). Then in the 90s it seemed to have lost its appeal; I remember the flack that ensued when the Gap opened a store here, and people thought Melrose was gonna start selling out to corporate chains and lose its edge. But eventually the Gap left (it became an Urban Outfitters) and Melrose seems to be coming back. This Sunday it had a good amount of people, and there were even flocks of young female Japanese tourists. I feel that this stretch of Melrose also seems to have more restaurants/bars than it ever did back in the 1980s, which I like. It's a good mix of businesses IMO.

OhioGuy Mar 30, 2010 1:51 AM

Sorry. Anything west of downtown is the west side to me. :haha:

Hehe :)

What I also like about this stretch of Melrose is that people-wise, you see a good cross-section of the city hanging out here. The fact that it's basically in the geographical center of LA is a contributing factor I'm sure.

Kingofthehill Mar 30, 2010 2:00 AM

Yeah, Mid-City West (the area Melrose is in) has it all..maybe a little too gentrified for my tastes, but a well-rounded area to be sure.

Nice thread, too, btw. Always good to see other LA forumers step up to the task :)

My God, what is it you want from every urban area!? Is it shooting alleys and povery-striken families all for some ~raw city grit~ the deciding factor of what's an acceptance urban neighborhood for you? Judging from the pattern of your posts/comments, it seems as though if there's any white hipster on the street or too clean of sidewalks in photos, it's just not cool enough and thus deemed "gentrified".

Kingofthehill Mar 30, 2010 3:13 PM

Who are you? Talking to me as if you know anything about me? Like I need to somehow explain my preferences to some random guy in the 'net. Piss off, troll :haha:

Quixote Mar 30, 2010 8:09 PM

I don't think it is Mid-City West. Mid-City West, to me, is the area bounded by Wilshire, La Cienega, La Brea, and the 10 Freeway. I think the Melrose District (special enough to warrant its own designation) is in both Hollywood and the Fairfax District.
