Erfurt Pictures?
I am traveling to Germany next year to study in Erfurt in the state of Thuringia at the University of Erfurt. I was hoping that anyone from Erfurt could possibly post any pictures they have of this wonderful city?

Picture perfect, except for that stupid graffiti on the Kramerbrucke (sorry, i can't type umlauts on my computer). Thanks so much for this. I haven't been able to find any good shots of the city. I much bigger than I perviously thought.

Beautiful pictures! I'm happy to see it's quite a bit larger than I previously thought. But it's still not HUGE, which is good for me, because my German isn't perfect.:D
Are either of you German? Could you maybe describe to me the ticketing system for trains? (prices, etc...) Not only within Erfurt and the state of Thuringia, but to other cities in different states as well? For instance, what would a round trip ticket to Berlin cost me? |
http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml is the English language site of the German railroad company. I'm afraid it's rather weird and unintuitive. :( I keep getting different results for that putative Erfurt - Berlin round trip of yours :hell:
According to the information I gleaned, the Erfurt - Berlin round trip ticket price fluctuates between 78 and and 108 Euros (please don't ask me why! :shrug:). The trip takes about 2 1/2 - 3 hours. Some trains are direct, or you have to change trains once. My ultimate advice would be to see a travel agent (although many of them have quit dealing with the German railroad company and may no longer be of help) or to go directly to the railroad station, conveniently and unlike most airports located right downtown, and to head for the travel center. You can pick up printed train schedules for lots of destinations there, and the people behind the counters tend to be knowledgeable and will give you good and current advice. I see you'll be going to study in Erfurt "next year." That's quite a while off, but good for you to start early with your planning! Do bear in mind that those prices may change. |

Würzburg suffered a lot of damage during WW2 and it can be quite clearly seen in many spots. Heidelberg is nice I suppose but by and large I just prefer Erfurt (what's more, according to the offical data Erfurt is almost twice as big as both of those cities). Regensburg is a beauty too but some of the facades look a bit bland in that city and you sometimes encounter those horrible West German white plastic frame windows that ruin any old building.
If I had to come up with a city that rivals Erfurt, I'd actually mention Wiesbaden. Pretty nice size, great architecture and a good location. |
Erfurt looks really nice. Especially considering its size. Is it one of the only cities in Germany that didn't suffer alot of damage from the war? Because it seems that pretty much every city has, unfortunatly.
