Beautiful public art and monuments.:) Where I reside people in general including the ones in authority do NOT know how to commission a decent public art piece. We have garbage here, the only decent public art pieces you will see in town are within the MGM City Center, corporate owned.:(

Detroit has beautiful bones. Like the "Rust Belt" generally, the architecture is beautiful. I like Sun Belt cities like Atl, Clt, and Dallas, but those cities lack the architectural grandeur and stunning monuments that one finds in Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo.

I'm always impressed with how clean the old limestone buildings are. No evidence of pollution - I guess they have all been cleaned/restored over the years?

Vegas forget it, again the ones in charge don't care. We have a brand new Supreme Court/Court of Appeals in Downtown Vegas, what a joke of a building and the City Hall of Las Vegas another joke, they placed neon on a government building and it has a light show during the evenings! :haha: What I admire the most in town as far as architecture is the Clark County Government Center, now that is one beautiful structure same with the Smith Center across the boulevard from the government center. |
I've uh...been to his little borther, Windsor, ON.

Detroit's architectural gems almost make up for the inertness of its modernist duds. This is not just Detroit's failing, either. Almost every American city has decided to cleanse away the liveliness of the city in favor set pieces and empty sidewalks. It's a tragedy that we couldn't have encased really wonderful places like Detroit (and Philly, St Louis, Cleveland, Baltimore,et al) in aspic for a couple of generations until Americans got over their fixation with squat boxes. I hope Detroit really comes back and not simply as an euthanized city with postcard views.

^Luckily, the last few times I have been to Detroit it has been very bustling and energetic in the downtown areas. I don't think one has to worry about Detroit becoming a sterile and empty (yet very pretty) set piece any time soon, anymore!

Some great pictures there, thanks for sharing. I visit Windsor fairly regularly and often have thought there's some lovely buildings in the Detroit skyline. You've captured their essence well.
|
Detroit has some great areas. You would not know that if you listened to the national media. The old sections remind me a lot of Chicago, but without the newer tall buildings.
