A $55 million upgrade to parkland along Buffalo Bayou is set to add performance venues, improve recreational areas and revitalize downtown-area green space that officials hope will become a magnet and refuge similar to New York's Central Park.

Houston City Council on Wednesday approved an operating agreement paving the way for construction, including a major restructuring of Buffalo Bayou and restoration of its ecosystems. The Harris County Commissioners Court will take up a similar agreement Tuesday.

The details of the plan are a little different this time around, but the goal is the same: at least 1,000 rooms in a high-rise hotel on a parcel that mirrors the Hilton Americas across Discovery Green park.
So looking at google map, is that lot that sits on the corner of Crawford and Rusk? It's right across from DG and Hilton Americas. Another lot may bite the dust.

Lake|Flato and Studio Red Architects selected to design Midtown arts center

he Independent Arts Collaborative has announced that architectural firms Lake|Flato and Studio Red have been selected to design the organization's new art complex planned at Main and Holman in Midtown.

The multi-tenant performance and exhibition space will be designed with the input of nearly 40 Houston arts groups. Organizations like DiverseWorks, Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex, and Aurora Picture Show have been involved in recent discussions, although participating groups have yet to be finalized.

"This is an amazing opportunity to work with such a wide range of disparate arts groups," Ted Flato, principal architect at San Antonio’s Lake|Flato, told CultureMap. "We look forward to getting everyone's input. In the end, the architecture clearly will reflect that spirit."

With an estimated cost of $25 million, the 85,000-square-foot complex is planned to feature a 400-seat theater, a large exhibition space, and five black box performance spaces as well as workshop areas, classrooms, and office space.

Slated for completion in 2015, the IAC center is poised to become catalyst for Midtown commercial, residential and cultural development.

I believe there are only two projects. One is the McCue apartment complex and the BBVA building, which has two cranes working on it. Maybe I'm wrong though.

The crane by the JW Marriott is the Westheimer and Sage high-rise apts they're building. There's a forum on HAIF for it, and I've driven by many times. So yes, there are a confirmed 3 projects on that webcam photo.

I dont know if this was mentioned, but the Phoenecia grocery store at One Park Place is open and its pretty awesome. Tons of Middle Eastern foods and stuff you usually cant find in the states from all around the world. Its decently priced too and was pretty full of people today. Its so awesome that downtown now has a grocery store, its about freakin time too.

Then an update on the soccer stadium, its a hot mess right now and Im not too sure on the design, its kinda strange, but Im sure it will grow on me.

Also, just something extra since not much is going on right now; back in June or July I was able to get up to the top of MainPlace and got to go out on that top balcony and take some pics.

Can someone make a list on what's approved, under construction, and proposed and all that jazz?

TexasBoi Dec 28, 2011 3:24 AM

Yeah that would be interesting. I would like to see a list as well.
