The Neighborhoods section is an interesting read. Being that I grew up in West, I never had much of a reason to travel to Fishtown, Brewerytown, and other neighborhoods back in the 2000s. It's hard for me to remember that Fishtown was a rougher neighborhood, but those pictures from 2006 showed me an angle that I'm not too familiar with. The Piazza wasn't built yet, so the northern portion of Northern Liberties must have still been rough, and South Kensington must've still been generally untouched by development. Brewerytown started to intensely revitalize right around the time I became interested in development, so I'm less surprised by that album.

The Haddington album was also great, especially the pictures of the El before reconstruction! I miss the sounds it used to make when running over that old red viaduct when my family would catch it at 52nd Street.

If you want to get some more nostalgia for turn-of-the-21st Century Philadelphia, got to Atlas and hit up the Pictometry aerial imagery-- you can set it back to 2003.

Thank you everyone for the responses, especially John III.

I'm not old enough to remember what that area was like pre-construction, and barely old enough to remember what it was like pre-addition. I often walk by it and wonder what it must've been like before. The way both the Convention Center and the Galler- erm Fashion District cantilever over 10th and 11th is certainly a unique dynamic and one that I can't picture a Philadelphia without. Everyone's comments have really help me understand what was lost.

I just wish Phillyhistory had more photos, though. Not much exists of the Convention Center area pre-construction.

Keep checking back though — the Phila. City Archives has a huge number of photos that haven't been digitized yet (they estimate 2 million images total) and they're gradually adding more. My wish is that they would provide higher resolution photos online.

You can get higher resolution copies from them, for a price:

Commercial/For-Profit Use:
$50 - $100 per image
Non-Profit Use:
$10 - $15 per image
Government Use
Varies
Prices will vary based on the number of images requested, the planned use, and how soon they are needed.

Wow-- I know I've asked you this before, but is there any way you can share your 3D models so the rest of us nerds can add them to our Google Earths?

I would be happy to do this. I have trouble with file sharing. What would be the easiest way to do this?

Each one of those models is saved somewhere on your device as an individual .kmz file. You can share them on a platform like dropbox or google drive. I believe you can also save your entire group of models as one .kmz file-- here are instructions for that from a website I found:

In Google Earth, create the polygons that you wish to share. Or, locate the polygon group that currently exists in your Saved Places listing.
right-click on the group, and choose Save Place As to save the locations in a KMZ file.

Again, you'd have to share it on some kind of filesharing platform.

I'm sure some tech-savvy person on this group has an easier way, but try this out. Thanks!

Yes, we've been talking about it since last Friday in this thread and it already has its own thread too:

OK
I think that's it.
I'm a bit embarrassed of my filing system.
When I started doing this I wasn't planning on it getting so involved.
I think they're all there.

Surprised this wasn't posted yet, but Council is considering delaying changes to the 10 year tax abatement until 2024 and introducing a 1% construction tax as a compromise (presumably, to win over more progressive members who want to get rid of the abatement altogether). Personally, I think this makes sense given we need to continue to make the City attractive to new residents. Even if prices of new construction go up 1% due to the tax, I'm pretty sure buyers would save money on their mortgage payments under the existing abatement scheme, at least after the first ~2 years.

65 feet was the proposed limit; thank goodness it was vetoed.

And so what.... they're going to levy this 1% tax increase on construction AND THEN reduce the tax abatement in 4 years.... so just a double-whammy to new construction in a 4 year span? Sounds dumb as fuck. That 1% construction tax will ultimately just be passed onto buyers and renters anyways.

One or the other... not both.
