NEW YORK | 420 East 61st Street | 450 FT | 43 FLOORS
420 East 61st Street is the second part of the Sutton Place North towers. Tower One was constructed in the early 2000s, however the second tower became a victim of the credit crunch. Now developer, Sheldon Solow has decided to move forward with the tower.
There are no renderings that I know of, however the Tower Two will likely look much like Tower One (the black tower in the center of the photograph below): http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7150/6...530d81fb_b.jpg Dick Johnson USA @ Flickr |
I passed the site today and construction is at street level. There still is no crane however.

A black skyscraper is a nice change from all the blue ones popping up recently...

Anyway, great update. |
Black is Beautiful!

Here's a rendering, I don't know if it's the latest design though

So it looks like it will go directly between the old tower and the water?
|
They're also building a tower a block away, on 61st, and another directly across the street (other side of 60th/York).
There are a bunch of residential projects planned or u/c in this area. |
I like the rendering a lot. I hope it looks something that when finished.
|
I like it when black skyscrapers have a hint of bronze in the cladding, like Trump World Tower, so that the blackness isn't drawn out by the sky's reflection.

As of 10-26-2012
Some updated pictures, taken on the night of the 26th (pardon the quality, I took them with an iPhone). This thing is going up fairly quickly.

I like it

a relatively small footprint, is there a third phase to come on the balance of the site?
|
No, it really was 2 towers. It's unclear if the remaining area will be public plaza, or if there is going to be retail put in around the corner and then have green space above (that may or may not be public).

Just rode by in a cab, and its definitely as tall as the 59th at bridge now.
|
Looks like the Roosevelt Island Tram is right above it.
|
Nearly. The original building was a cornucopia of voyeurism and exhibitionism for the tram when I lived on RI, and that was the slender side of the building. I suspect this will be even better.
