An article in the Toronto Star for the New One Bloor East. The last proposal bit the dust...

If anything kept him awake at night, says David Gerofsky, it was an overwhelming sense of responsibility.

"This is a larger-than-life project, and there were a lot of expectations," said Gerofsky, president of the Great Gulf Group of Companies.

"So we had to do it right the first time."

Gerofsky is talking about One Bloor. The mixed-use project at the intersection with Yonge St. has been the site of controversy since the original developer, Bazis International, became a poster child for the global economic meltdown last year.

"There is only one Yonge and Bloor. It's not just the most important corner in the city, it's probably the most important corner in the country," Gerofsky said in an exclusive interview with the Star.

In advance of a Thursday news conference, Gerofsky talked about his company's plans for the hotly anticipated project, and how he says it will transform the city. (...rest of article...)

Renders from the Star article

The thread title should be changed to Number One Bloor

J_M_Tungsten Mar 24, 2010 3:38 PM

It reminds me a lot of Aqua in Chicago, very cool though!

done.

i dig the new design.

Aleks Mar 24, 2010 10:46 PM

niceeee! i hope it comes out lookin' as good as the renderings!

waterloowarrior Mar 24, 2010 11:43 PM

Whoopsl, actually a correction on that name change Dan, it seems to be called simply "One Bloor" now (previously it was called Number One Bloor, before that it was a different developer and was called 1 Bloor East).

There is definitely an Aqua resemblance

I love that there are Aqua knock offs, surely the sign of a good idea! I like the design though, even if it resembles Aqua.

uaarkson Mar 25, 2010 4:50 AM

Hopefully (likely) it'll turn out better than Aqua, too. ;)

bob1954 Mar 25, 2010 5:08 AM

It's better than Aqua, and I'm from Chicago!

Complex01 Mar 25, 2010 3:42 PM

looks kewl, i likes...

Jonovision Mar 25, 2010 5:33 PM

Great looking tower! I hope it finally gets built! I especially like the podium.

Coral Builder Mar 31, 2010 2:28 AM

I was just going to say, I really like the podium. I see the immediate resemblance to Aqua, but I'm not a big fan of Aqua, so I'm hoping it doesn't look like it when its finished. Also hoping the height gets increased when it goes into sales.

Aleks Mar 31, 2010 4:34 AM

the only reason why this reminds me of aqua is the part where the glass meets the balconies.

the waves... well, theyre not really similar to aquas. at all imo. im glad the top isnt plain! and it looks like there's gonna be a lot of glass on this one.

You can call it a knockoff if it makes you feel good. It does have many similarities to Aqua but really represents the architect and the trend in using balconies as ornamentation here in Toronto. Whether it's random or staggered placements or something more inspired.

Dr Nevergold Mar 31, 2010 8:05 AM

The new 1BE looks absolutely amazing in renderings (as long as the protruding balconies aren't white painted concrete), the ground level hopefully will be very organic and interact with the street and become part of the landscape, hope to see close ups of the bottom.

And I'd say the Aqua was inspired from the Marina.

The renderings for this look VERY cool.

Re: Aqua comparisons.

It does have a slight resemblance, but I find Aqua doesn't have the same symmetry of One Bloor.

Does anyone else find the podium too busy?

I love how the podium interacts with the street yet flows into the design of the tower. For me, it's all depends on the use of quality materials such as thick custom curtainwall, metal accents, lighting and stone finishing/proportions.

In all sincerity this project greatly surpassed my expectations, especially considering it's been designed by what was, only a few years ago, a rather generic 905 subdivision/executive home developer.

Also there's been a height varience (increase from 65 to 70 stories)
At 70 stories the height will be around 775 feet.

Traynor Jul 8, 2010 4:26 PM

One Bloor has been approved for a height increase and is now listed as 70 floors. Time to update the thread title.
