CHICAGO l Dearborn Center l 1,135 FT | NEVER BUILT
I usually refrain from starting a thread without much information.
But I was hoping others might have some insight to this proposal. I believe it was by SOM, and I read somewhere that they eventually used the interior design/layout in the Jin Mao. To me, the design looks like a post-modern Tribune Tower. http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/9...set1547ht3.jpg http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/2...ncenterhm9.jpg Anyone have additional info/illustrations? |

Dearborn Center is by far the best postmodern piece of architecture I have ever seen.

this one would have been pretty damn cool thoguh had it been built. i believe the proposed location was adams/dearborn, kitty corner from federal plaza. the bofill tower that eventually got built there is far less inspired. |
You guys are alot braver than me. lol
I was afraid to say it...but I also thought the design was cool. (and I HATE post-modernism) |
I like this tower; is there anything else that has been placed on the lot?

This design is certainly reminiscent of Jin Mao in some respects (particularly the telescoping form of the setbacks), so it is not surprising that bits of this design would later be incorporated into Jin Mao.
I'm not sure how disappointed I am that this was never constructed. Another 1000+ ft. tower would have been nice, but the amount of detailing to the facade that is present (that I can glean from just these two photos, anyway) leaves a lot of potential for error in that department. I also find the buttresses on the crown to be just as fussy as the ones on Tribune Tower. |
yes, this looks like Adrian Smith's work. This "contextualism" idea of using elements from other Chicago buildings to formulate this building is intiguing but a bit of a one-liner. NBC and Trump have the same concept. This reminds me of 311 south wacker (kpf) and att corp (som)
