CINCINNATI, in a Winter Wonderland.

Well it's that time of year folks. You know what I mean.

http://www.christmas-treasures.com/F...stmaselves.jpg

In celebration of that time of year I thought I'd do a special edition of a USA Sprawl Festival.

Not only will you get pictures of sprawl, you'll get pictures of sprawl in the snow!!

Well, mostly in the snow.

But before we show some snow we have to know that Spring Training is only 3 months away!
http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/4378/cincy1pp8.jpg

At least the Bengals are busy this time of year. Though not for this picture.
http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/4450/cincy2zi1.jpg

But before we get to the sprawl, I just couldn't resist this beauty . . .
http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/8742/cincy3ko1.jpg

And this one, too. This looks like "the hood."
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/1653/cincy4ed1.jpg

OK, now we get on with the sprawl . . .

This one's for bgwah. Notice the trees planted in the middle of the cul-de-sac. Seattle and Detroit have company. :)
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/2564/cincy5hp2.jpg

http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/4715/cincy6lp1.jpg

Some people can walk to their shopping.
http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/4761/cincy7hz7.jpg

Close-up of some typical houses.
http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/6086/cincy9ac7.jpg

There was a HUGE industrial park a ways north of the city. This was just a slice of it.
http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/8191/cincy10ng6.jpg

Snooooowww!!! You can see the tracks of sleds on the school grounds.
http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/7467/cincy11ew4.jpg

Christmas shoppers busy at the mall.
http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/2462/cincy12ld4.jpg

And when the shoppers get home, it all goes here.
http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/2961/cincy13li2.jpg

More industry and business.
http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/4466/cincy14pn5.jpg

http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/1733/cincy15zq2.jpg

Not many golfers in the snow, I would guess. Though ya never know.
http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/5028/cincy16je0.jpg

Quaint. A railroad station, a little business district, a cute little church and some cute houses. Looks like a Thomas Kinkade painting!
http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/8306/cincy17qv1.jpg

I'm guessing that's a fake-old building in the middle, not a real one.
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/5087/cincy18mu4.jpg

Blah!
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/5000/cincy19wo5.jpg

Another close-up of some houses.

Building new stuff in the snow.
http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/1189/cincy21er4.jpg

Townhouses and apartments. The pool looks frozen.
http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/8934/cincy22xs1.jpg

Quaint church in a quaint neighborhood. Another Thomas Kinkade painting.
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/8759/cincy23dc4.jpg

http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/6801/cincy24ur1.jpg

Let's go ice skating! Make sure the ice is thick-enough, first. ;)
http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/3839/cincy25sp0.jpg

About as average as you can get.
http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/7573/cincy26ay5.jpg

An average shopping center in an average neighborhood.
http://img334.imageshack.us/img334/3580/cincy27kf9.jpg

I got bored of averageness and decided to stick in this non-sprawl beauty here.
http://img334.imageshack.us/img334/5624/cincy28mj5.jpg

I've been working on the railroad, all me live-long day . . .
http://img334.imageshack.us/img334/7210/cincy29ow1.jpg

Mmmmm . . . sprawl? Or not sprawl?
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/5961/cincy30ec9.jpg

And yet another break from the spraw. Sorry I just couldn't resist these interludes. :(
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/275/cincy31ua8.jpg

Back to the sprawl again . . .
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/6165/cincy32yt3.jpg

Fantastically average.
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/5869/cincy33az9.jpg

Hideously common.
http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/56/cincy34jx3.jpg

Average apartments.
http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/3554/cincy35sc6.jpg

Lots of pretty snow. :)
http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/9950/cincy36xz7.jpg

I bet no one's playing tennis in those courts on the right.
http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/8598/cincy37kc7.jpg

A far-away view of some burbs in the (pretty) far north metro.
http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/4004/cincy38gv9.jpg

Winter Wonderland! With a quaint chuch in the corner.
http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/2084/cincy39fw7.jpg

Life in a cozy cul-de-sac. Sorry bgwah, no trees in the middle this time.
http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/4218/cincy40dt7.jpg

Some office campus, I think. Or maybe a community college? :???:
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/5773/cincy41nc6.jpg

More bleh.
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/3479/cincy42qd4.jpg

. . .little pink houses for you and me . . .
http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/1865/cincy43ow9.jpg

Average suburban apartments.
http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/8022/cincy44be0.jpg

Some folks don't have far to go for their Christmas shopping.
http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/2926/cincy45qg7.jpg

New stuff. With more on the way.
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/7170/cincy46gl3.jpg

Another quaint church in a quaint (sort-of) neighborhood.
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/973/cincy47qx8.jpg

Ditto. Except this time the church is modern.

Very interesting! Love the railroad one.

8th from bottom...
"Some office campus, I think. Or maybe a community college? "

Actually I worked in the building on the left years ago, the Cincinnati office of Jacobs Engineering. The building on the right is Western Southern Life Insurance.
What a great thread, we'll be back there for Christmas visitng family, hope to see (just a little) snow.

James Bond Agent 007 Dec 20, 2006 7:16 AM

^
Thanks. The obelisk thingy in front of the building made it seem like it might be a community college. Can't remember the last time I saw a big obelisk like that in front of an office park. But lots of colleges have big clock towers and the like.

JManc Dec 20, 2006 7:24 AM

i think i saw a statue of cincinnati's most famous son...no, not pete rose or US grant but our very own BN001!

Dylan Leblanc Dec 20, 2006 7:32 AM

Bond I've looked through many of your sprawl threads, and I find they all leave me feeling scared and empty. Winding roads and cul-de-sacs are horrible way to live. Why oh why can't we go back to the grid!

Calm down Dylan, everything will be alright. All you need to do is buy yourself one of these and you'll be nice 'n safe. No need to be scared anymore.

You didn't see the one they erected in ColDayMan's honor?

Nevermind, that's probably in Circleville.

Haha. Home is sprawly.

ColDayMan Dec 20, 2006 7:22 PM

^That doesn't even make sense.

Anywho, just a little comment (btw, great thread):
http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/8306/cincy17qv1.jpg

Is a suburb along Cincinnati North Mainline suburbs (Glendale). If you follow the same tracks, you'll see other "cutesy towns" such as Wyoming and former Hartwell and Woodlawn. That eventually hooks up with Union Terminal, for past commuting (not anylonger, for obvious reasons).

beesbees Dec 20, 2006 7:47 PM

Most of those new developments have no fenced of gardens... I suppose if you wanna sit out, you have to do it in the presence of everyone else on the road?

secondson Dec 21, 2006 1:33 AM

"Quaint. A railroad station, a little business district, a cute little church and some cute houses. Looks like a Thomas Kinkade painting!"

I really wouldn't consider that suburban sprawl. It's in Hamilton County, and the top center area is the historic Glendale village square. It used to be Glendale's "downtown" way back in the day. Those homes are HUGE and they have been there for years. It's actually a very charming place.

"I'm guessing that's a fake-old building in the middle, not a real one."

Yes, it was designed that way. But it's been there for as long as I can remember.

Also, there's a lot more sprawl south of the river....Independence, Cold Spring, Burlington, Florence, etc. You may want to have a look over there for the second installment of this thread.

One final note.....when did you take those shots? Quite literally, the most snow we've had so far this season has only been a dusting. Seriously. We've had a whopping total of .10 of an inch so far - hardly anything to plow or go sledding on.

Windows Live Local bird's-eye coverage only barely went south of the river.

Those aren't my shots, those are from Windows Live Local. Have no idea when they were taken.

I wonder if a University of Dayton Flyer fan lives in the house in the center?

There's a little bit of everyone's town... in everyone's town.

don't even think about going for a stroll on the sidewalk.

POLA Dec 21, 2006 11:31 PM

great series, this one seems rather nastier then than those we've seen as of late. BTW, I would love to see a companion series of streetcar suburbs and new urbanism towns.... Anyways, it huts to look but I can't... look.... away...

Monetto Dec 22, 2006 2:18 AM

It is impossible not to love and hate this series. In one of the pictures I could actually remember driving down the roads in Toledo, Ohio, and seeing the same view. Beauty is genuinely lacking from our cities.

UncleRando Dec 22, 2006 7:34 PM

By far the best pic of them all is the one with the rail line running through the 'quaint' settlement with the RR station, church and whatnot...the hills also make it a beauty!

nbrindley Dec 22, 2006 8:33 PM

I find it odd that Phoenix is often held up as the model of sprawl, when it's new development tends to be much more dense than sprawl in the eastern half of the country. It's all suburban, sure, but the lots seem to be barely half the size of new construction back east.
