Model Manhattan

After doing some 11th hour shopping the day before Christmas, I found a great little gift for myself... a scaled down Manhattan! Of course it's not realistic... a great swath between Lower and Midtown has been eliminated while the island itself has been a bit shortened and simplified, but whatev. The buildings however are surprisingly detailed with many usually forgotten buildings included such as the Javits Federal Building, Transportation Building, Whitehall Building, Cityspire, AXA, 55 Water Street, Irving Trust, the old MetLife, etc..

The model is really a puzzle as you have to put together the "floor", then the second layer which is Manhattan Island itself, and then the buildings. The first part took a hell of a lot of time and patience... especially as I bought this more for the buildings, not to put together some puzzle. I'm still not too sure why the puzzle is marketed as "4D" though...

sorry about the lighting

Model completed

Sunday night and the model is officially complete:

(as you can see I decided to go with the original WTC rather than put in the new WTC buildings... I'll probably rotate between the new and old every once in a while)

In TimesSquare we have Conde Nast, Marriot Marquis, One Astor, 2 TS, Bertelssmann, Reuters, JP Morgan, Paramount, and that one other building behind 1 TS (can't remember the name)..

obligatory postcard view of LM from Brooklyn. Seen here are the usual suspects... American Int'l Bldg, 40 Wall Street, Woolworth, WTC, WFC, Thurgood Marshall, Municiple, Chase, JP Morgan, 55 Water Street, etc..

It turns out I was suppose to poke holes in the puzzle for the bridge supports, but I had already completed the puzzle by then so I decided not to bother.

It's 4D because of the timeline aspect of the puzzle, the fourth dimension is time. Follow the timeline diagram while you are building the city and you will see the city as it grows from the early 19th century to today.

Oh man, this is the coolest 'puzzle' ever!

KevinFromTexas Dec 30, 2009 3:12 AM

Yeah, that's pretty cool, especially the timeline idea.

I saw that in a bunch of gift-shops on 5th Av. Kinda wanted it, but didn't want to spend $50 on something that'll just take up space and collect dust. :/

^if your curious, the puzzle takes up 2 ft, 4 in x 1 ft.

btw a glass case is also sold separately... for $59.00 :runaway:

I just bought the New York puzzle, my first one, and just ordered the Tokyo puzzle as well. I was surprised to discover my illustration of American Interanational Building (70 Pine St) is one of five illustations on the front cover!
