2011 Best Tall Building Americas

Quote:

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat is pleased to announce the winners of its annual “Best Tall Building” awards for 2011. These awards recognize outstanding tall buildings from each of four geographical regions, and this year are awarded to: "New York by Gehry" at Eight Spruce Street, New York (Americas); Guangzhou International Finance Center, Guangzhou (Asia & Australasia); KfW Westarkade, Frankfurt (Europe); and The Index, Dubai (Middle East & Africa). These buildings were selected for their design and technical innovations, sustainable attributes, and the enhancement of both cities and the lives of their inhabitants.
Quote:

The façade of "New York by Gehry" at Eight Spruce Street, designed to create a draping fabric-like quality, creates a unique signature, while holding itself as very much a “New York” building grounded in its traditional setback rules. The façade is partly a result of the client’s desire to have bay windows in each residential unit. The windows are shifted from floor-to-floor and vary in size, creating the drape-like effect. Inside, the residential units are arranged to efficiently marry the plan to the façade.

“The tower invigorates a part of Manhattan that has been somewhat overlooked in recent years, and as the Tallest All-Residential Building in North America, adds significantly to the urban-population and diversification of its neighborhood.” – Rick Cook, 2011 Awards Chair, Cook + Fox Architects

Awesome photos. My cousin, his wife and their kids were in town a few weeks ago, and they were all blown away by this building, they're from Denver fyi.

This is one of those buildings where it's really difficult to think of something I don't like about it. I guess from some angles it looks a bit lonely, but that's really nit picking and has nothing to do with the actual building itself. Overall this building is a masterpiece.

This is a fairly simple building for a Gehry design. By applying graduated variations in the perimeter of each floor plate, the effect of undulation emerges. Structural columns remain plumb, which is a vast simplification for Gehry. A similar concept was applied to exterior balconies of a tall building on Chicago's Lakefront. But Gehry of course chose to clad the waves with stainless steel and he has admittedly achieved a much more elegant execution.

Downtown's Brand-New Spruce Street School Welcomes First Students

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver posed with a dapper Spruce Street School student Sept. 8, 2011.

Quote:

Nervous and excited, clutching parents' hands and racing ahead to greet their friends, students at Downtown's Spruce Street School crossed the threshold of their brand-new building for the first time Thursday morning.

Inside the new 630-seat school, which was designed by Frank Gehry and sits in the base of his New York by Gehry apartment tower, flashbulbs popped and a crowd of grinning politicians, including Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott, offered handshakes and high-fives.

Nicolas Heron, 39, a TriBeCa resident, said his twins, Sam and Mia, who started kindergarten Thursday, have been excitedly watching the rise of the Gehry's rippling apartment tower above their new school. "They can see it from everywhere," Heron said. "They say, 'This is our school! This is where we're going!'"

For a second there I thought the roof top play room was actually at the top of the tower.
