Homicides are up but not by that much. definitely won't be reaching 70 or anything like that this year which is good.

Shootings are at an all time high though way more than any year past, so far there have been 330 shooting occurrences and 464 victims.

"Victims" in those stats doesn't mean that someone was actually shot, that would be shootings resulting in death or injury, which currently stands at 153.

Of course with 311 shootings without injury (136 of them "unknown"), there are lots of people who got lucky they weren't hit and probably even some who were hit and didn't even seek medical attention. Most of those were probably just people shooting off their guns for kicks, though.

Well either way it's a very big increase in gun violence.

Acajack Oct 22, 2016 5:17 PM

16 for Ottawa now.

Toronto is on its way to exceeding the number of shootings that occurred during the "year of the gun" in 2005 when there was 359 shooting occurrences. As of October 17th, the total stands at 330. With the recent gun violence since the 17th, the number of occurrences is likely close to 340.

The uptick in the number of victims even when the total number of injured is similar to the mid-2000s, is probably due to the Toronto Police counting shootings where there are no injured, or where injuries are unknown, as having one victim even if that is not strictly the case, and an increase in the number of shootings where more than 1 person is injured during a single event. If that is true, then the victim tally is somewhat misleading as it suggests a massive increase in the number of people shot, which is contradicted by their own statistics on the number of people injured.

However, if we consider only the number of shootings, we can see a substantial increase in 2016 that rivals 2005. For comparison purposes, there were 326 shootings in 2003, a relatively violent year for Toronto in terms of gun violence.

As Long as Toronto's increase in Violence doesn't affect Softee, MisterCoorporate or WhiperSnapper I'm good.

I was on Wikipedia the other day and noticed that Russia's homicide rate has collapsed in recent years, from something like 21/100,000 on average in 2005 to 8/100,000 in 2015. Chechnya has the lowest rate now!! From 36.1 in 2005 to 0.7 in 2015. Which means most of our cities have a higher murder rate than Chechnya.

We know that many (most?) of the murders motivated by homophobia in Russia wind up being ruled suicides, accidents, &c. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that other homicides are similarly being swept under the rug.

vid Oct 23, 2016 8:19 PM

Still, either they're doing it more now or they only recently started? It's a startling drop.

Maybe it's like what someone said about Halifax about 10 years ago: the murder rate has only gone down because all the people who need to get killed have been killed?

JuelzJones Oct 24, 2016 2:15 PM

I think Edmonton is at 33 or 34

I would be very suspicious of some countries statistics - always remember that the USA has a significantly higher number of rapes than India if you go by official statistics (3 times higher number despite India have 4 times the population). Japan's murder rate is also suspiciously low.

Montreal is at 17, now. One ahead of Ottawa.

Québec City is still at zero. But, as I said before, there is a suspicious death under investigation.

Oh, and as for Toronto. Yes, the 57th hasn't happened, yet but I would not be surprised if Toronto had more than 70 this year. Murders are unevenly distributed as the first 3 months of the year showed. Clustering happens a lot. Still, if Toronto makes it to Dec. 1 below 60 then I would say that it is very unlikely. But with more than 60 days left in the year it is too early to make such predictions.

Ottawa had its 17th homicide, in the wee hours this morning. The victim was stabbed out by the St Laurent shopping mall.

Okay, finally an update on the suspicious death in Québec City. First murder of the year took place on October 7.

For the update - Quebec City is at 1. Metro at 1. City pop. 540,000, Metro - 860,000.

Apparently, an 18-year-old man killed a six-times convicted 73-year-old pedophile (premeditated murder according to the Journal de Quebec).

First murder in over 14 months. Previous murder was on July 12, 2015.

Here is the link. Obviously, as per usual, it is in French only.

Using that website, London {pop 400k} is at 4 and metro {500k} is at 5.
