The stretch of Amsterdam in the 60s is quite bleak, so this will be nice. Permits filed in June & July with challenge pending, so this should be rising soon! Won't make an impact on the skyline but should be good filler.

Excavation has begun on this building. I wonder what it will look like?

Not really on the topic of this specific building, but what's the name of the building in the background in the picture, above? I think I've seen in a music video.

The building behind the excavation at 170 Amsterdam Avenue is part of the Lincoln Towers complex of apartment buildings that runs from 66th to 69th along West End Avenue.

Looks like they are beginning to pour the foundation on 170 Amsterdam Avenue. There were several concrete trucks on site today.

Thrilled for this - the rendering is actually quite promising, IMO, and the most exciting thing for the UWS in decades!

It's got that Tower Verre skeleton thing going on there. It's begging to be taller though.

It looks like Handel tried to put some effort into this thing, but they couldn't even bother to make it fit in with that new synagogue next door? The streetwalls don't match up. The way they designed this tower exposes ugly party walls on both buildings. The proportions are also way off. It's funny; they decided to throw nearly all context out the window, except that they borrowed the squatness of the hideous commie-block Lincoln Towers in the background.

On top of that, the positioning of this building ensures that the grid will never be restored through this megablock.

Some interesting design concepts, but when you put it all together this building is ugly.

Thought I'd share this view from our apartment in the Dorchester Towers across the street . . . it's raining and they're laying the concrete on the 12th floor. They were doing the same last week through all of the snow, etc. Must be some good OT for these guys! The cement pump/hose is fascinating to watch too! :-)

Also, agree on the comment about context . . . the building is a vast improvement over the blight of the mini strip mall that used to be there. And anything that blocks Lincoln Towers from our view is a big plus . . . but looking at the block as a whole, with Citibank and the old Library/Synagogue for bookends, amidst the oddity of the new Synagogue (which took 5 years to complete, btw -- what a mess that was look at it!), it just doesn't feel cohesive at ALL. Oh well. Maybe in a couple of years I'll be able to afford to live there, and then won't have to look at it everyday.

This is one of the few times I will defend a broken streetwall. I dont think the setback is that bad at all. One thing that could be done to make it look more "intentional" would be for the temple to wrap that grey stone around the corner onto the party wall (at developers expense?) or create a living wall of plant material. As for the bank branch who cares that probably wont stay that long anyways - the wall of the new building seems to be anticipating that.
