Iqaluit Airport

Update: This will be a P3, it appears to be getting alot of international interest. In other words alot of bidders. Should be interesting to see what comes out of this.

Now that Stantec has a foothold in the North it will be interesting to see if this pans out for them.

Looks like the feds are pulling funding on Rec centres all across the country.

Iqaluit aquatic centre's Ottawa funding rejected
City hoped federal government would help with $40M project

Fucking Harpy Sweatervest needs to move to Texas... but I doubt even they would want such a jack ass.

Airboy Nov 30, 2011 8:10 PM

Iqaluit is up there with Calgary in denying the P3 for Rec Centre.

However the north needs facilities like this. Rankin Inlet had there Rec Centre put on hold by the NG

At least Resolute and Pond Inlet got their Arenas in before The funding Cuts.

One of the comments on that Iqaluit Aquatic centre story:

Iqaluit should probably get their roads paved and plate some trees first. .
*facepalm*

Agreed. Funny though, the roads are being paved. And they did plant those real pretty wooden posts around town.

Chadillaccc Nov 30, 2011 11:11 PM

So... they are going around "planting" wooden posts... like fake trees?

Nice updates Airboy, thanks.

That 'high arctic' school of architecture is rather interesting.

Everything has to fit o a barge so the finishes are normally wood. Also they like colour up there.

Probably the best Architect Up north is Harriet Burdet Molten in Iqaluit now with Stantec. She understands the environment the best. The MCHC in Rankin was designed by an Architect from Ottawa. Terry Grey in Iqaluit is also quite good. When I finally get up to Whitehorse I'll post some shots. There is some great work there as well.

Haha, we should line the streets of Toronto with mangroves before giving them a subway system. :koko:

Chadillaccc Dec 2, 2011 3:49 AM

What?

vid Dec 2, 2011 11:04 PM

I was mocking the comment Jamaican-Phoenix posted about not giving Iqaluit money for an aquatic centre until they plant trees and pave their roads.

Iqaluit is in the tundra where trees cannot grow, and roads can't be paved because the permafrost causes them to disintegrate in the summer.

Your right about the trees, but there has been a paving program the last few years. Most of the main roads are paved now to keep the dust down, Also the road to Apex is paved.

But what is the quality like and how much do they cost to build and maintain? It's probably more expensive than southern cities.

Chadillaccc Dec 4, 2011 10:27 AM

are there any high rises on the horizon for Yellowknife? With the economic boom and all, I'd figure there would be something.

Airboy Dec 6, 2011 4:58 AM

Got a Look at the FH Collins HS renderings today. Looks good, interesting to see what the final version will be like. Counted at least 5 different exterior panel/ siding elements. Also WH has a fare amount of construction going on in town. Snowing to hard to get any good shoots but will try later in the week.

Airboy Dec 11, 2011 10:46 PM

Didn't have time to get out and get some shot in Whitehorse last week, will try again this week.

They have been getting warm weather the last few weeks. Yesterday above 0, today not much different, and most of the snow is from last Monday.
