KALAMAZOO — Got several million dollars and an idea for redeveloping the buildings on Western Michigan University’s historic East Campus for a new use?

Seeking proposals from private firms, WMU is moving forward with plans to find a developer or developers with ideas to remake the campus that contains its first building, East Hall, and several others.

“The eventual use of these buildings does not have to be university-related, but it cannot run counter to the mission of WMU,” Bob Miller, WMU associate vice president for community outreach said in a news release.

“The architectural integrity of any building selected for redevelopment must be preserved, but other than that, we’re wide open to any economically viable idea,” he said.

University officials, on a list of major building projects, estimated it would take around $100 million to renovate the buildings.

.......
Finally, they seem to be getting serious about redeveloping one of Michigan's hidden treasures.

KALAMAZOO — Though there's not yet a timeline for the redevelopment, Western Michigan University has announced a "master developer" and concepts for the long-awaited revitalization of its historic East Campus, including a boutique hotel, conference center and health club for East Hall, the university's building.

Three other buildings would house residences and/or business offices.

WMU has a letter of intent with Dallas-based KDC Real Estate Development & Investments to be the "master developer" for this project, Bob Miller, associate vice president for community outreach said in a presentation this morning at Schneider Hall on campus.

.......

Under the concept Miller revealed this morning, East Campus' North Hall would have residential units, such as apartments and condos. West Hall could apartments and office while the former Speech and Hearing building would house business offices.
