SHANGHAI | Wheelock Square Tower | 977 FT / 298 M | 58 FLOORS

Unfortunately, the original thread on this building was trimmed, so we'll have to start fresh.

It's located on Nanjing West Rd. in the heart of the Jing An Business District. It will be a 58 floor office tower and the tallest in Puxi until the Kerry Center expansion and the Xujiahui Tower top it in the coming years.

This building has taken a long time to rise (it officially started back in 2004), but finally (as of October 2007), it's on it's way up, waaay up!

Architect: Kohn Pedersen Fox

Some renderings and my photos from the past couple of years.

I stopped covering it for over a year as they built the underground floors. I went back in September 2007 to find this:

I've just moved in to a new apartment that is three blocks away from this site, so expect a detailed account of this building in the coming months/years.

Good !
That's a quality project in Shanghai.

If the cladding on this is anything like KPF's IFC in Hong Kong, this should be a stunning tower.

Wow, this tower is going to be nice when it's done. Can't wait till it's completed!

If it is ever done. This is the slowest contruction ever.

Giallo, where is this going up again?

The intersection of YanAn and HuaShan Rd...across the street from Jing An Temple.

They've finally put up a proper rendering of the building. It took long enough.

Not sure. There was an ad in the local paper recently that said it's going to be Puxi's tallest.

Fabb Jan 3, 2008 10:08 AM

It's weird that Shanghai doesn't have a single skyscraper in the 300-400 m range (excluding spires).
Wheelock came close...

giallo Jan 7, 2008 5:25 AM

The new Xujiahui tower should change that.

staff Jan 7, 2008 5:30 AM

^^
XT is going to be exactly 400m, no?

giallo Jan 7, 2008 1:16 PM

Not anymore. It's been reduced to 340m.

Where's the new Xujiahui Tower going? Is it close to the other big skyscrapers in the area (the two above the Grand Gateway Mall)?

Complex01 Jan 7, 2008 3:05 PM

I like the top. They look like wings or something...

The huge plot next to Grand Gateway on Hongqiao Lu - it's already cleared and ready for construction (incl. an extension of the metro station).

giallo Jan 8, 2008 3:39 AM

I'm almost tempted to start a thread on the Xujiahui project. It's been approved, and as far as I know, it's UC.

Maybe we can get Bob Loblaw to go check the site for us seeing as it's just a few blocks away from his place.

^^
The problem is we thought it was U/C a year ago as well when the 400m tower had been "approved", but it was only the metro station they were digging.
Hopefully it's happening for real now!

staff Jan 9, 2008 7:21 PM

SSC forumer whoami claims that this is the facade being tested on the Wheelock. I don't know though as I have no idea how far this tower has come.
