Today, the first sod will be officially cut for Stockholm’s second highest building, Victoria Tower, whose tenants include the new hotel Scandic Kista.

Inofficially, construction has already started in earnest.

With its 120 metres, Victoria Tower will be the second highest building in Stockholm after the Kaknästornet.
Building a 33-storey hotel cannot be done overnight and the building contractor Arthur Buchardts AB Invest AS has therefore already begun blasting and excavation work.
The hotel will be completed within two years.

The hotel will have a distinctive design. The glass facades of the hotel will appear to glitter at dusk.
Wingårdhs Arkitektkontor is responsible for the design.
The hotel, located adjacent to the exhibition and events centre Kistamässan, will be operated by Scandic Hotels.
Victoria Tower will contain 300 hotel rooms and 10 floors with around 5,000 sq.m. of office space.

Inauguration of the hotel is planned for September 2011.

This one is a hotel tower about 10km from the Central Station, out here in my suburban burough of Kista. It'll be part of the new KistaMässan convention/exhibition center, but is a separate project from it even thought they'll be physically connected, it looks like. I guess they split things up so if one got held up the other could go ahead without waiting.
here's a map of part of Kista, with other highrise-plans marked. The Victoria Tower is the light blue one on the right.

Older stuff:

Quote from the main investor:
my translation:
"But the building is dimensioned so that it can be extended by another 54 meters..."
So it might reach 174m in the future :)

Old version had mostly hotel but also 10fl offices and a bar up top! Status of this not known in this latest version.

A previous version was at 140m going to be Stockholm's tallest, and construction was supposed to start in 2008 but with the economic crash the plans are now on hold waiting for things to turn upwards. Considering the location and financial/political backing for it I'd be surprised if it, or a close variant, didn't get built eventually.

Looks pretty nice. Very IKEA looking. ;)

Great news for Stockholm.

Swede Oct 16, 2007 8:40 PM

Not so sure I like the design myself. But it's not so ugly I oppose it in any way :P

one thing that wasn't so easy to change tho is the LRT. That's not an LRT, that's one of Stockholm's new commuter trains, the LRTs are shorter and much lower.

Bergenser Oct 23, 2007 6:56 AM

Congratulation's Stockholm.

Rico Rommheim Oct 23, 2007 6:05 PM

Nice looking building, I wish we built quality scrapers here too. But we don't. :(

Surrealplaces Oct 23, 2007 10:15 PM

Slick looking tower.

Swede Oct 29, 2007 12:05 PM

Acording to a short (not that informative) article on high-rises proposed in Stockholm this tower is up for aproval by the city "within a few days". So that's good :)
Also they've got a web-vote thingy next to the article and almost 70% think high-rises do NOt destoy the aesthetics of the city. So the nimby's death-grip on planning for the Inner City here is slipping.

cityguy Oct 29, 2007 12:21 PM

Is it just high-rises or do nimby's hate all development?Everthing thing seems to take forever to build in Stockholm.

Swede Oct 29, 2007 4:34 PM

The nimbys are pretty much against anything. Even when something has to be torn down or it'll fall down, they want something very similar built to replace it - even when it's a friggin' eye-sore. /I'm talking about Slussen

Sweden also has a very open appeals-process. One man (with a little financial help) was able to hold up a major Stockholm inrastructure plan for ten years:
http://www.vv.se/filer/28066/17_Stoc...ng_NL_stor.jpg
Norra Länken, another 15-20% of the freeway loop around the Inner City, all of it in tunnels. the reason he appeald? the construction tunnels would hurt the water-flow to a small group of trees in a park.

Dalton Oct 29, 2007 4:44 PM

A very nice looking design that works well with its surroundings. But what's with the woman with the long black hair and sunglasses in the right foreground? She looks really pissed off. :haha:

djvandrake Oct 29, 2007 5:10 PM

^^^ Probably didn't want her picture taken.

This is a very interesting looking design. It's quite original and for that I'll give it kudos. I'm not terribly crazy about the design, but I think it'll be a nice addition.

Nightsky Oct 29, 2007 5:18 PM

Congratulations Swede! The 2 tallest buildings in Stockholm in your area...let's hope it will get built. I also like the design, it looks perfect with the lightrail in front of the building. What happened to Kista Residence, is there still a chance it will get built? Kista could be the Stockholm's La Defense in the future.

Swede Oct 29, 2007 5:34 PM

ResidenceTower is dead :( but the site is up for getting soemthing at least a bit tall on it, last I heard (a few months ago) the word was two 30s towers, but that did seem at bit much, probably a missunderstanding somewhere.

But yeah, Kista is looking more and more like Stokholm's La Defense :D

Complex01 Oct 30, 2007 7:14 PM

Wow, this tower looks kewl. Very bold design. Nice...

Here's a direct link to the project's page on the City construction office (SBK)'s site http://planer.sbk.stockholm.se/SBKPl...w____3804.aspx
It is open for public views until 2008.01.16. You can even submit your views on-line by using a form that is linked from the above page. I did, and said the only critique I had was no more wings and that it wasn't taller. :)

Here's three pics I got from a pdf on that page :)
