These are elevators in the United States of America that are on the outside of the building, not walled by glass but exposed to the elements for 90% of the trip.

There was one I saw in an apartment complex in Denver many years ago but I cannot find it now.

Detroit's Renaissance Center has them.

I stayed at the Bonaventure in LA a month ago, when the temps got down to the 50s. One surprise is that the elevators can get cold and drafty in that weather.

EEs might help sustainability because they reduce building square footage, but these must have leaked air like hell. Thinking abou it, that's a lot of exterior doors leaking even when they're not opening/closing.

I haven't noticed the same thing at the Space Needle. But what are the really cold locations like?

That's not exactly on the "exterior" though.

One Nationwide Plaza in Columbus does but it's rarely used.

correct, the renaissance center's "exterior" elevators run inside of glass enclosures that protect them from the elements. while the view from inside while riding them is still really cool, it's not what the OP was asking for.

i don't think a true exterior elevator would be practical anywhere in the upper midwest where winters (and the snow and ice they bring) would wreak havoc on any kind of true exterior elevator system.

The Glass Tower in 'The Towering Inferno' had them...
