Hamilton TigerCats

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...Cats_retro.jpg

We can use this thread to discuss anything to do with the Ti-Cats! I know there's not much to talk about THIS year... but here's hoping for '08:

is 2008 the year of Casey Printers or Richie Williams!? Will Lancaster finally get the (real) boot? What's gonna happen with Charlie Taffe?

Let's keep everyone informed... maybe we could even convert a couple ticats.ca forumers to join up here as well ;)

SteelTown Oct 31, 2007 2:41 AM

I feel so bad for Bob Young. Spent so much money and invested so much into this city yet he continuously gets a crappy team. He deserves a parade all on his own lol.

the dude Oct 31, 2007 2:49 AM

^true enough but bob's made some terrible decisions and the results are fairly plain to see. i love his emphasis on canadian talent, coaching but it's back-fired badly. they're so bad it's frightening. teams score at will against them. we may have to look further ahead than next year. hopefully the fanbase will hang around, though last week's crowd was dismal. here's hoping things turns around quickly.

DC83 Oct 31, 2007 2:54 AM

^^ The main reason for the crowd last Friday night was b/c of the weather.
My bro and his friends are Season's Tix holders (and have been for years) and none of them went only b/c they all thought it was going to rain... which it did, for about a quarter total...

No Playoffs + Rain + A Shitty Team = last Friday's Attendance (19,322 according to ticats.ca)

Ticats to axe GM
Nov, 04 2007 - 6:00 PM

HAMILTON (AM900 CHML) - The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are expected to announce the firing of general manager Marcel Desjardins.

A news conference will reportedly be held Monday morning to make the announcement official.

For complete details, click on Ticats Nation on our homepage.

DC83 Nov 5, 2007 3:27 AM

^^ Wow... he was suppose to be our (on-field) "saviour"!
Obviously he failed... but we can't completely blame him, I'm gonna go with Lancaster and his "my way or the highway" attitude.

I was at last night's game, and despite how FREEZING it was, and how shitty they are this year, I still had a GREAT time! I'm glad we wasted so much money on "Oh no I'm Injured" Printers! haha Richie Williams was great last night! re: defence, I'm pretty sure they forgot they were playing football!?

Ticats fire general manager Desjardins

The Canadian Press
11/5/2007 9:53:12 AM

HAMILTON - The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have fired general manager Marcel Desjardins after just one year at the helm.

The move was announced in a three-paragraph news release Monday morning.

Desjardins completed his first full season as Ticats GM on Saturday with a 21-19 victory over the Edmonton Eskimos. Despite the win, Hamilton finished the 2007 campaign in the CFL basement with a 3-15 record, which was worse than last year's 4-14 mark.

Desjardins was named Hamilton GM on Aug. 29, 2006. Prior to that, the native of Burlington, Ont., spent five seasons as assistant general manager of the Montreal Alouettes. He also spent five years at the CFL's head office in Toronto.

Desjardins had received heat in Hamilton for the Ticats' regression and also for making some questionable deals.

On Jan. 31, he sent offensive lineman Wayne Smith and receiver D.J. Flick to Saskatchewan for quarterback Rocky Butler and a 2007 second-round draft pick. The deal came after Flick refused to take a substantial paycut. The Ticats ended up letting go of Butler, who is now with Toronto, while both Flick and Smith made the Roughriders roster.

In fact, Flick has prospered in Regina, catching 10 touchdown passes this season.

On June 27, Desjardins dealt defensive back Tad Kornegay to Saskatchewan for receivers Thryron Anderson and Jason French. Anderson isn't with the Ticats while French has enjoyed a roller-coaster season with his new club.

Then, on Aug. 19, Desjardins sent running back Corey Holmes and rookie receiver Chris Getzlaf to Saskatchewan for running back Jason Armstead. The acquisition of Holmes was met with glee in Regina, where he was the West Division's outstanding player finalist and the league's top special-teams player before being dealt to Hamilton. The hope was Armstead would become a deep threat for the Ticats, something that didn't materialize.

Desjardins also did sign free-agent quarterback Casey Printers to a four-year deal reportedly worth $1.8 million. But while the Ticats did win two games with Printers in tow, he figured in neither due to injuries.

The departure of Desjardins also does create questions about the long-term future of head coach Charlie Taaffe, a Desjardins hiring who still has two years on his deal with the Ticats.

thank goodness...that's step 1.
Step 2 is getting rid of this horrible coach.

DC83 Nov 5, 2007 4:23 PM

^^ get rid of Taaffe! The guy obviously doesn't want to coach a pro team!
Has anyone seen ANY emotion from this guy this season? I can't remember the last time I saw a change of facial expression even! ugh.

raisethehammer Nov 5, 2007 5:00 PM

more importantly, one bad decision after the next.
I was at Acclamation with some friends watching football a couple weeks ago when Taffe and the coaches/wives came in. They had just been throttled by (I think BC??) and you would have thought they won the lottery with all the fun they were having.

The GM guessing game
A look at possible candidates who could be the next Ticat general manager

November 06, 2007
Steve Milton
The Hamilton Spectator
(Nov 6, 2007)

Team president Scott Mitchell made official yesterday what had been widely anticipated for weeks.

The next Hamilton Tiger-Cat general manager will have CFL experience as a GM.

And, in other shocking news, the Ticats will try to get some better players. Mitchell has a plan of attack that likely involves a primo choice and someone else he'd be nearly as happy to have.

The Ticat prez is well-connected throughout the CFL and those people he's targeted are very aware that they've got a lucrative bull's eye attached to their chest.

It's also probable that the top couple of choices are working somewhere among the six teams still in contention. If that weren't the case, the Ticats would have a new general manager this morning.

Here's a look at the potential candidates:

Bob O'Billovich: One of the most intriguing possibilities. He's 67, but is still an energetic, effective talent judge and recruiter as B.C.'s director of player personnel. Obee has been GM of both the Argos and the Lions and still lives in Oakville. One possible scenario would be to secure O'Billovich as GM, then provide him with a bright young trainee who could move seamlessly into the Big Chair in a few years.

Jim Popp: It's widely expected that Popp will be ordered to give up head coaching and concentrate on the GM job. But has all the controversy surrounding the Alouettes also eroded his cachet as GM there? Will team president Larry Smith and owner Bob Wetenhall decide they need a fresh start in the front office too? Mitchell has his ears to the ground on that one which, in itself, will give Smith and Wetenhall cause for caution.

Jim Barker: He's been the head coach of the Argos and Stampeders, and the GM of the Stampeders the past three seasons. Could be liberated from the dissatisfied Stamps, and is a strong candidate although the people in Calgary don't think so.

Wally Buono: Solid as a rock in B.C, and not going anywhere. Still, Mitchell might make a call to Lions' owner David Braley, a Hamilton lad, just in case. Stranger things have happened. But not many of them.

Roy Shivers: If so, why isn't the former Riders' GM here now?

Adam Rita: Has done a terrific job as GM with the Argos, and has won six Grey Cups in various capacities and cities. Deeply-entrenched in the Toronto organization and not likely to move but might want a new challenge if there's a refitting of the organizational chart. This is an extreme long shot.

Brendan Taman: Has impressively restocked the Bombers and has a great gig there. He's a friend of Mitchell's but it's unlikely that he'd want to leave the 'Peg or that the Bombers would want to lose him.

Greg Mohns: Adam Rita's assistant GM and director of player personnel, Mohns was the director of personnel and assistant GM of the Tiger-Cats in the early 1990s.

Tom Higgins: Higgins could well be out as Stampeder coach. He served a term as GM of the Eskimos. But he doesn't have the bearing of a Mitchell man.

Dan Maciocia: The Eskimos have missed the playoffs two years running but their coach and de facto GM is likely to survive the wrath of the green and gold. Paul Jones is the talent finder and Mitchell won't really be interested in either of them.

Matt Dunigan: Had a shot at it in Calgary which, in the infamous Feterik era, was less stable than what's gone down in Hamilton. Lives in the area now, but loves the TV stuff. Not experienced enough.

Mike McCarthy: If he were the No. 1 choice, he'd be GM today since he works for the club as player personnel consultant. Has GM'ed successfully in Hamilton, B.C. and Toronto. Is an important part of the Cat organization, with a deep contact list and is one of the few people in the franchise with a connection to a better past. He could get an opportunity to GM elsewhere.

Dan Rambo: Former Ottawa GM, with a respected CFL history, he was brought in as director of football operations partway through this season. That was widely interpreted as manager-in-waiting, but says he likes his current role, and doesn't want to move away from Ottawa. The Cats don't want a GM who isn't living here.

The new GM would be out of his mind not to retain him as No. 2.

Scott Mitchell: Has said he won't do the job, isn't qualified, and has too many other responsibilities in the Bob Young businesses. We'll hold him to that.

Come on now. What happens at work is one thing, what happens in your personal life is another --- if you have a bad day at the office, it shouldn't stop you from getting together with co-workers afterward. It may well have been someone's pre-planned birthday party (or something like it) for all we know. If having fun were dependent upon winning, then these guys would not have been able to leave their homes all season.

BCTed Nov 6, 2007 12:46 PM

I have nothing to base this on, but I always got the impression that Marcel Desjardins had no idea what he was doing. He just didn't inspire any confidence in me for whatever reason.

I predict a 5+ win season next year!

Ya, I think it was more of an "I don't care attitude" from not only Desjardin, but Taaffe as well. Not to mention a whole crapload of the players. No one seemed to care.

5+ season? Sweet!! That's almost playoff contention! hehe
Well anything would be better than 1, 2 or 3 wins :(

I wish they hadn't!

Plus, sports is different than the office. You're PAID to win, not just show up and be miserable until the day you die. I would have at least expected them to appear to have cared a little about what just happened 1 hour earlier.
either that, or maybe they were just drinking the pain away....who knows.

Got an interesting email from Angus-Reid tonight re: CFL Fans in Canada. Didn't know where else to post it but on this thread. Check it out:

Quote:

More than Half of Canadians Have a Favorite CFL Team
The majority of adults in Canada have a favorite Canadian Football League (CFL) franchise, according to a study conducted through the Angus Reid Forum.

In the online survey of a representative national sample, 56 per cent of respondents expressed support for one of the eight existing CFL franchises, while 44 per cent indicated they do not root for any team. View the table below to see how the teams stack up.

https://www.angusreidforum.com/media...mber_graph.gif
It's terrible that there is 44% of Canadians that don't cheer for any particular team. Perhaps this is the reason for why the league isn't as strong as it can be.
I wonder where the majority of that 44% were? Atlantic Canada? Western Ontario??

Stampeders part ways with coach Higgins

The Calgary Stampeders will have a new head coach next season. Tom Higgins was let go Thursday after losing his third straight Western Semifinal game with Calgary

Higgins was offered a post of executive vice-president within the organization, but turned it down.

Higgins says that he turned down the offer because he could not see himself working at a desk.

"I'm a football person," Higgins told THE CANADIAN PRESS Thursday. "I've been a football person all my life. I don't think I'm ready now to start dealing with public relations, the media and special projects.

"When I turned down the job that was presented to me, I knew there was still a mindshift that was going to occur that I was no longer going to be the coach of Calgary Stampeders. That doesn't fit my personality, lifestyle choice as of right now. I like to be involved in football operations."

No replacement was named, but the Calgary Sun and the Calgary Herald have both reported that former Stampeders offensive co-ordinator John Hufnagel was expected to be named coach and general manager. An official announcement could come after the Grey Cup.

"On behalf of the Calgary Stampeder Football Club's Ownership Group; management; coaches; players and the entire Calgary Stampeder family, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Tom Higgins for his commitment to the Club and the Canadian Football League over the past three years," said Managing Partner and President Ted Hellard in a statement.

"Our hope was that Tom would accept an Executive Vice-President position within the organization. However, we respect and appreciate Tom's passion to remain on the football field. We wish Tom success and good luck in his future endeavors."

Higgins led the Stampeders to an 11-7 mark in 2005, as the team won seven of its final eight games before falling to Edmonton in the Western Semifinal. Higgins earned his second CFL Coach of the Year award for that effort.

Hopes were high for the future, but in 2006, the Stampeders were 10-8 and fell to Saskatchewan in the Western Semifinals.

This season, Calgary was 7-10-1 and once again lost the Western Semifinal to Saskatchewan. There was some dissention on the team, with many veterans not appreciating Higgins' plan to constantly rotate players at various position on a game-by-game basis. And defensive co-ordinator Denny Creehan was fired during the season.

Higgins has 25 years of experience in the CFL, including 13 with the Stampeders organization.

Before re-joining the Stampeders organization in 2005, he coached the Edmonton Eskimos for four seasons, winning the Grey Cup and Coach of the Year honours in 2003. In total, Higgins won three division crowns with Edmonton and made two Grey Cup appearances.

Higgins had been with the Eskimos since 1993, when he was named assistant general manager. He took over as Edmonton's GM in 1997 before assuming the head coaching job in 2001.

Prior to that, Higgins had been with the Stampeders in various capacities.

After his playing career, which included stints in the CFL and the NFL, ended in 1981, Higgins coached the University of Calgary for three season, winning a national title in 1983.

Hmmmm... I think *I* know a City/Team that could use a EXPERIENCED cfl coach ;)
