WOW.

What a great set of photos!

Some random observations:

- The airport looks better than I remembered.
- Wayne State U. needs to do something about that strip mall next to its administration building - preferably, tear it down.
- I like what I've seen of Boston-Edison on this board.
- I love that CPA Building (I mentioned that in another thread). You'd think some accountants would get together, fix it up and move their offices there.
- Campus Martius looks cool.

Sekkle Jan 21, 2009 7:32 PM

Incredible photos! Thanks for the tour. I've seen pics of that Michigan Central Station building in several threads... it never ceases to amaze me.

flar Jan 21, 2009 7:39 PM

Wow, that was extensive. I think you showed a little of everything.

Top Of The Park Jan 21, 2009 7:50 PM

Winter seems especially cold there....

Yo excellent pics really show the difference between those that have and those that don't

In the future could you please break it into 2 parts......it froze up my computer for 10 minutes

xzmattzx Jan 21, 2009 7:51 PM

That's a lot of pictures. The suburbs looked nice, and I am surprised at how nice the neighborhoods that I believe are somewhat far away from Downtown are like.

Are there any plans for the historic Ford plant?

holladay Jan 21, 2009 11:47 PM

Fascinating thread. Probably the best and most comprehensive Detroit thread I've seen. You obviously have a true appreciation for the subject matter around you because it is evident through your photography.

Clevelumbus Jan 22, 2009 12:16 AM

Awesome thread!

Very extensive. I love Detroit

I was born here, although I'm pretty sure only the tower existed.

hudkina Jan 22, 2009 4:37 AM

I believe that building in the foreground predates the tower.

In any case, great set. It's good to see your mother's house still occupied. Detroit's suburban downtowns rarely get seen on this forum, so it's good to see you got around!

STLgasm Jan 22, 2009 1:14 PM

Great thread! Palmer Park is amazing-- that should be premier neighborhood.

So many underutilized buildings... it's a shame the economy all but insures they will remain vacant for years to come.

Is there anything left of Detroit's Chinatown? That cool little sign must be 30 years old!

Funkie Jan 22, 2009 4:34 PM

Thanks everybody for your great replies!!:previous:

And to answer a couple questions:

Well right now it is being used as a warehouse and is owned by a development group that has plans to create lofts and office space in the historic buildings. But I haven’t found out anything specific about the redevelopment and it doesn’t seem that it will happen anytime soon…
It’s quite a shame :(

It doesn’t seem like it. The only Chinese things I saw were that empty Chung’s restaurant and a couple of stores. Chinatown is only like two blocks big…

Amazingly fascinating - and kind of depressing.

There's one windowpane that is'nt broken in the Michigan Central Station. What a shame, couldn't anyone fix that???!! ;)

It doesn’t seem like it. The only Chinese things I saw were that empty Chung’s restaurant and a couple of stores. Chinatown is only like two blocks big…

Yeah, my reaction to that picture was 'What Chinatown?'

Thanks for the posting!

Great set of pictures. Rather gloomy but great! The images show a lot of good architecture going to waste.

A couple of bits of info:
1. The 1st house you picture in your Boston-Edison section is the Charles Fisher mansion (of Fisher Body/GM fame). It was put up for sale a few years ago for just under $1 million.

2. The Lafayette building (first pictured right after the Westin Book Cadillac) may be torn down. In December, the city of Detroit has begun demolition proceedings.

A couple of minor corrections:
1. The parking garage that they would not let you into was built inside the former Michigan Theater which had about 4000 seats; it was built as a movie palace. The current Opera house is the former Capital Theater on Grand Circus Park. The old Opera house was torn down many years ago and was on the site of the current Compuware Building.

2. Not really a correction but I would like to point out that the Mariners Church may be older physically but St. Anne's Parish is the oldest church in Detroit (founded in 1701, the same year as Detroit itself).

Good thread!

Since I haven't been downtown in awhile, I've been wondering if the back (elevator shafts) of the Greektown hotel tower have been cladded yet and with what exactly. It's hard to tell from the first pic but are they covering it in glass? Anybody been by who knows?

LMich Jan 23, 2009 7:21 AM

Yeah, they are going to cover it with glass, at least that's always been the plan.

Detroit never had a large Chinatown; at its peak it was only home to 3,000 Chinese. But, it was really cut down before it could ever reach its potential by the construction of the Lodge. Given that everyone was fleeing the city by that time, anyway, they all simply packed up and move to the northern suburbs.

Fascinating thread. Beautiful Art Deco in the city and at high and low levels. Sad to see that not all of it is used. Thanks for the tour!

The airport looks better than I remembered.
[QUOTE]

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but Detroit has the most modern airport in the country now. The pics shown here are of the McNamara Terminal (opened in 2002), and there is also the new North Terminal which just opened in September 2008.

Great set of pics.

Very nice showcasing of Detroit. I flew to the airport there once when I was on my way to Virginia. I was very impressed. I remember when I first saw the express tram inside there. I thought that the light rail system actually went through the airport.

I keep hoping and praying that Detroit will get it's second wind. Seeing all those burnt out houses makes me wonder if Devils Night is still practiced there?? :( Thanks for the pics!!
