The PA was supposed to be moving into the tower, but last I heard is that they were having 2nd thoughts.
Also, the Chinese firm Vantone is supposed to be moving in as well. |

not moving into the building would i think cause negative speculation (safety, quality etc) |
Or maybe the thought of another 09-11-style attack! Not yet, but they will own it eventually.
Silverstein is building it, but when it's completed, he turns it over to the PA. So I think THEY'LL be in charge of renting out office space in it. Also, I think they'll move into it though. |
^ Just to give a quick history, because it's somewhat complex:
-The Port Authority owns all the land. -Originally, Silverstein was to have a long-term lease (99 years) and development rights to all the WTC towers (Freedom, 2,3,4,5 & 7) and below grade retail levels. -Under a restructured agreement in Spring of 2006, the PA became responsible for building the Freedom Tower, Tower 5, the PATH terminal, the Memorial and Museum, the Vehicular Security Center, retail development and shared infrastructure components. -Under the same agreement, Silverstein's retained long-term lease and development rights for Towers 2, 3, and 4. -Addendums stated that government (state, federal, municipal) agencies would occupy a certain amount of space in both the Freedom Tower and one or more of the Silverstein towers. The PA has been slated to go into Tower 4, not the Freedom tower. -Silverstein would also receive a $20mm fee to manage construction of the Freedom Tower -In June of 2007, the PA sold the Tower 5 development rights to JPMorgan Chase for $290mm. -On Tuesday, it is expected that the PA will announce that it has agreed to sell a 50% stake in the below ground retail complex to the Westfield Group. |
The PA is NOT building the tower. Silverstein IS.
The PA will be in charge of leasing the office space, the two floors for the restaurant and the floor for the obs deck. |
Well I just heard on News Radio WCBS 880 that the memorial completion has been pushed back two years. It will now be completed in 2011 as oppose to 2009. The reasoning behind it is plainly having a more realistic construction timetable.
|
Also, maybe they want to open it on the same day as the Freedom Tower.'
Maybe the FT, memorial and the PATH Station will ALL open on 09-11-11. |
I think the design and architecture could have been better than this !!!!
|
Thanks for your input, Fred. How would you improve the design?
|
Hi from Vancouver. Where in the image is the DeutschBank building that they're tearing down? Which tower will go in that spot?
|
The DBB (130 Liberty Street) is across Ground Zero almost from where the Freedom Tower is being built. It has a large white crane erected in front of it and it is notably shorter than its original height.
Tower 5 which will replace that building, will be moved back a bit further and a small park will occupy the spot in front of it. Somewhat like the one in front of 7 WTC. |

Are you there, Fred?? |
I absolutely love the design!!

Freedom, Set in Special Concrete By David W. Dunlap The Freedom Tower construction site at 1 World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan. Just about every element at ground zero generates heat. Even the concrete. With walls up to 5 feet 10 inches thick, the core of the 1 World Trade Center project (also called Freedom Tower) requires tremendous amounts of concrete; so much that the chemical process by which the concrete takes form and hardens — starting from a mixture of cement, aggregate and water — actually creates its own considerable heat. If temperatures at the center of the concrete pour are above 160 degrees, or if there is a difference in temperature of more than 35 degrees between the inside and outside, it can lead to stress and deterioration. “That’s a major challenge in a project like this,” said Michael J. Mennella, executive vice president of the Tishman Construction Corporation of New York, which is managing construction of the Freedom Tower for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. So it was news when the commissioners of the Port Authority were told on Tuesday that an extremely high-strength concrete formula had been used successfully for the first time in New York City, as part of the Freedom Tower project. This concrete has a strength under compression calculated at 14,000 pounds per square inch. (The highest strength previously used in a New York skyscraper had a rating of 12,000 pounds per square inch. A house might use concrete with a strength of 2,000 pounds per square inch.) A steel column bears the words “Freedom Tower” and is partially encased in concrete. http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/...zero.large.jpg The formula was devised by a company called iCrete and employed at the Freedom Tower by the Quadrozzi Concrete Company, a subcontractor. “To get this kind of strength in concrete, you usually have to increase the amount of cement,” said Tony Arnold, president of iCrete. “We reduced the amount of cement.” That in turn lowered the temperature of the chemical reaction. It incidentally helped reduce carbon dioxide emissions during production of the cement. The iCrete formula also uses byproducts of steel fabrication known as slag and fly ash. About 700 cubic yards were poured Tuesday atop an earlier pour of 630 cubic yards, Mr. Mennella said. “You’re not going to find too many places in the world with walls this thick,” Mr. Mennella said as he looked over the twin cores of the Freedom Tower, still far below street level but now on the way up. “This is one of them.” You also will not find any other place in the world with a steel column bearing the words “Freedom Tower.” This column was set in place exactly a year ago as part of Gov. George E. Pataki’s last official visit to the trade center site. It is now partly encased in concrete and says simply, “Freedom.” |
[SIZE="3"]THE FOUNDATION IS LOOKING GREAT, I CAN'T GET OVER HOW THICK EVERYTHING IS , YOU WOULD THINK A 150 STORY SKYSCRAPER IS GOING UP..ZE]
|
Note that that one of the cranes appear to be slightly higher than the other, signifying that half of the core is 'Movin' On Up', Weezy!
The steel columns look almost similar to the ones used for the Twins in that they are almost tublular-shaped. |
Looks like the whole contraption will hit street level in all parts by the middle of 2008, hopefully. Then, once the complex and extensive below-ground podium work is complete, the tower should shoot up at a faster pace.
|
Yeah, the foundation has more steel added to it also!
