Please make sure that any photos you post in this thread are properly credited like this: 1 - Include the photographer's name/screen name. 2 - Include a link to the page where you found the photos. An image link is NOT enough. You must post a link to the actual page where the photo is located. Also stay on topic. This thread is for construction updates on the building. It's not meant as a place for political debates over Korea. |

Sorry about last time. This time I followed the rules. Recent pictures are from 6/5/2011. All credits go to Mike Stuart Wood.

Does this guy also have pictures of the base? Haven't seen up close photos of it in a while.
|
No sorry. There aren't any base pictures, but on the top picture you can see the cranes that are mounted on the base if you look closely.
|
All fine and nice; only a matter of time before the inevitable collapse of North Korea though.
|
Does anyone know if there are plans to make this building safely habitable?

Read the news article here.

This tower literally scares the hell out of me. I'm putting on my nerd hat here... it could easily be the Galactic Empire's Sith temple on Coruscant.
|
Front area progress....
|
We saw that already back in March. It's an outdated photograph. The most recent pictures I have posted are from June.

But overall, DAM! this tower looks like something out off the future. quite a beauty. |
Forgive me if this has been asked before, but this is just a 100% cosmetic job for propaganda purposes, the building its self is a lost cause for any sort of habitation or use still right?
|
Nope BBC reported that this building will undergo renovations so it can be used in the future. For now it will just be a shell, because of their economy except for the top which would be used by Orascom for their telecommunications network.

It's not for propaganda. Look up Orascom Telecommunications, and Koryolink.

This building looks like it belongs in a fantasy movie or cartoon - it has to be the most unique building in the world - i am glad it has been recladded

It was hideous as a concrete shell but now that it at least has the look of a finished building it is quite fascinating. Would be interesting if any SSP photographer types ever got access to Pyongyang or, better yet, some of the other cities (e.g. Hamhung, Chongjin) of which outsiders see even less than the capital. The bits I've seen show some examples of interesting architecture beyond Stalinist apartment blocks - and not even all of those are terrible. I'd enjoy the opportunity to tour the place, even knowing I'm going to have some Party lackey following me around telling me what I can and can't take pictures of. |

Any word if they've built some sort of 'lobby' or interior on the ground floor of the building, to make it look like it is actually used as a hotel? You know, to more or less make it look like the whole thing was actually finished... |
If you look at the pictures they are working on the lobby. It seems like the building will be used for telecommunications for now.

Man! What an awesome building! :D
|
If you look closely at some of the pictures you can see how the Ryugyong Hotel was constructed. Look at the models closely. Also in one of the pictures there is another picture if you look closely that shows the building under construction. It seems like they started construction on a foundation, then they laid the core, before they built the outer wings. They connected the outer three wings with the core, and they built this central pyramid which would give the Ryugyong Hotel it's famous shape.
|
Greetings, this is Zaruka and I photograph the Ryugyong hotel annually. I have been observing the hotel since construction was restarted in 2008. I have been to the construction site but not inside. I have requested a reservation in the hotel when any room becomes available for a photo shoot. April is the first date we have been given but in the DPRK that may mean October. I will go when any part opens. I understand some events may be held in the conference center but I want a room and a trip to the top.
I am glad that some of you have posted the photos. I do ask each year to get close to the building and they will take you close. Prior to 2008 there was not mention of the building. The state of the inside is difficult to determine except the conference center. I think one or two of the restaurants will be ready for 2012 (the centennial birth celebration for Kim Il-sung) and the conference center. I am signed up for a room when we can get a reservation. If they do things as they have, they will finish a high floor for the foreigners and lower floors for Koreans. We will keep watching and if something changes I will be on a plane. Photos are on Flickr user Zaruka. Ray |

love it. i can't tell whether the facade of the central part tapers upward or if it's just an illusion.
|
Too bad it doesn't have elevators climing the inclined sides like the Tyrell HQ in Bladerunner.
|
Wow talk about an update. You know looking at the pics for some reason reminds me of something you would see in the old Godzilla movies, he he. But I loved watching Godzilla so I like it. Very Kewl...

A pretty tall mausoleum for Kim Il Sung. Must be costly to heat the otherwise unoccupied building. Pyongyang is quite cold in winter. |
