York Boulevard Streetscape

Yesterday there was an open house for three concepts for the York Boulevard streetscape.

All three concepts summed up:
Two-way traffic
Scramble crossing at McNab and York Blvd
Bigger sidewalks
Curb side parking

I'll work on posting the concepts here.

The concepts are avilable for viewing here......

Steeltown
were you there? If you were I hope you weren't the old guy with nothing but complaints.

SteelTown Nov 7, 2008 2:26 PM

heck no lol

SteelTown Nov 7, 2008 2:45 PM

I really like the Woonerf concept, everything is flush no sidewalk to seperate from the road.

raisethehammer Nov 7, 2008 3:26 PM

I love these concepts...I like the woonerf, the wide sidewalks, scramble intersections and road closure options.
this would be great for this area.

Number 3 for sure. Great flexibility offered in that plan, you can still get 4 lanes of traffic during weekdays and on weekends kick it down to 2 or 3 lanes.

Not only that, but it's different, it's dangerous, it's exciting, it's scary! This city needs to be shaken up. It needs to do one thing, just one thing that is out of its comfort zone without giving into fear.

Some body needs to tell the old folks that these new projects aren't for them, they're for me and my children. So step aside please.

I like option 2 combined with option 3. The main difference being, I'd like to see 3 lanes of traffic instead of 4. Wider sidewalks AND the flexibility to close it down once in a while...let's be honest, it will hardly ever get closed down, so I'm thinking that the wider sidewalk option with only 3 lanes of traffic will be more impacting since it's permanent.

SteelTown Nov 7, 2008 4:48 PM

Really isn't concept 3 just basically concept 2 but it comes with making sure York is closed off during weekends and holidays?

Option 3 probably needs an extra council vote to approve closing York on weekends and holidays.

raisethehammer Nov 7, 2008 6:14 PM

I don't read where it says 'closed weekends'. It says closed for special events. if it was every weekend that would be awesome...but let's be real. this is hamilton.

option 3 also has an extra traffic lane in front of the sidewalk. option 2 removes that lane for wider sidewalks.

SteelTown Nov 7, 2008 6:25 PM

Concept 3 says on the third page

"Temporary Closure
The portion between Park and MacNab is closed to support events during weekends and holidays"

raisethehammer Nov 7, 2008 6:37 PM

what would be the point of closing it on Sundays??

SteelTown Nov 7, 2008 6:56 PM

I suppose they envision opening the Farmers' Market all weekend.

crhayes Nov 7, 2008 10:35 PM

A least they are considering getting rid of some of the parking lots. IMO this type of concept needs to extend past the City Center, cause as soon as you go around that bend and it becomes Wilson the street goes to shiet.

It's a nice concept though!

yup, definitely. I'm going to send in support for the 'wide sidewalk' option AND number 3 with cobblestone on the south lanes and 'flexible event' concept.
look how great the perspective looks with the wide sidewalk looking west down York.

I would expect some of the long time stall holders to be very resistant to an all weekend (i.e. Sunday) opening.

I expect some of them will be getting the boot anyway. A plan posted here probably a year or more ago included a recommendation to cut down on the number of produce vendors and replace them with vendors selling other types of items.

London (Ontario) rebuilt the Covent Garden Market while I lived there (and I was an almost daily market shopper). Some of the old vendors went out of business while it was closed for construction. Others couldn't afford the new higher rents. It changed quite a bit. I did continue to go almost daily.

I think that should be a big worry. Many of those long time stall holders are the ones promoting local produce. Losing them would diminish the uniqueness of the market.

If it becomes a market that is full of stalls of food from the Ontario Food Terminal (like the south building at the St. Lawrence Market), I'll just go to the supermarket.

raisethehammer Nov 8, 2008 3:36 AM

the original plan called for a yuppy, TO-style overpriced market.
But the public and vendor reaction was swift and harsh. The city has now said attracting more farmers is the goal of the new market, not less.
Call it a great example of the public demanding that our market continue to serve the needs of people, not Toronto yuppies.
