It is in the Arctic, but is not Alert, nor a dam.

Just because I think people are stalled on this, the key is recognizing just what type of grouping of buildings this is, and then narrowing down specifically what it is from there.

Calgarian Feb 15, 2012 3:34 PM

The buildings look like fuel tanks, and I think I see a landing strip?

suburbanite Feb 15, 2012 4:38 PM

The fact that it is relatively flat, and that there are several lakes rules out the Yukon. The image is also pretty clear which makes me think it's not too far north.

The first thing that came to mind was some sort of gas drilling site, but it looks too small.

Following up on what Calgarian and suburbanite had to say - a wild guess - no evidence - if not oil and gas, does it have something to do with diamonds?

jeremy_haak Feb 15, 2012 5:08 PM

Nothing to do with mineral or oil exploration. The site was established in 1957; that might be a pretty good clue as to the purpose of the site, because I don't believe much else was happening in the north at that time.

Is it part of the Dew Line or the Mid Canada line?

Blader Feb 15, 2012 5:19 PM

1957 - John Diefenbaker - the DEW line? - cancelled Avro Arrow - Bomarc missiles

LOL - just scratching my head - no hair left

Calgarian Feb 15, 2012 5:31 PM

It's Horton River NWT a.k.a. Malloch Hills DEW line site.

Spent too much time looking at DEW line sites, no time to find another place to post. Whoever can come up with one first, go nuts.

wow. when you zoom out on Horton River you can see what a bizarre landscape it has. That ancient river cutting across the peninsula is so strange. Thanks for sharing.

The interesting thing is that the old river course you see (which the station is partially built on) is not that old. The meander only broke through the other side of the peninsula in the 1800s. It goes to show how quickly the landscape can change.

Newfoundland, around Southern Harbour. It's the really narrow isthmus between St. John's and Gander. Someone else can go.

I was thinking about posting the Cypress Hills, but figured it would be too easy. I think I was right.
