What ever happened to...
I don’t think we have a thread like this, so I decided to start one.
With so many projects (towers / beautification projects / transit / roads / etc...) always being announced and / or suggested in our area, a few high profile projects seem to just fizzle out and silently disappear. This thread is for simply asking, “What happened to (insert project here)?” I will start by asking, what happened to the vertical farm tower proposed in Surrey? That was big talk on this forum for a long while, and then it just fizzled out. I thought of it because someone was talking to me about vertical farms being proposed / built in Osaka. Does anyone know what happened to that idea? |
A few that come to mind:
- Origami Tower east of Waterfront Station - Pagoda in Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Gardens - Clamshell over Robson Square - India Gate on Main St. - False Creek Surf Park - Observation tower at Queen Elizabeth Park - Bike bridge to connect Sunset Park & Vanier Park - Rain light effects on the Georgia Hotel Tower - Playland Revitalization - Vancouver's Affordable Home Ownership Pilot Program (Link) |
Origami tower was not approved due to its interaction with the heritage waterfront station.
The surf park was just someone's pipe dream and never realistic. |

The applicant then put its application on hold while it went back to address the issues raised by the UDP and community. There was an interactive open house put on by Cf and AS+GG the next year to test out some of the new urban realm and heritage principles which was quite well received. The project is being improved based off the lessons learned from those discussions. |
Nelson-on-The-Park
This would have been a tall tower, and a great counterpoint to the First Baptist Project (also a magnificent project)
Nelson-on-The-Park had an unusual upper piece made up if metal bars and beads, but all-in-all was (or would have been) a tall, elegant building. Whatever happened to it? It would have added so much to the city skyline. |
i want to know what happened to the PlayLand revitalization from 2016.

As for the Playland project. No idea. I remember there was also a good idea to build a new WCE station there. That idea also just seemed to fade away. |
The PlayLand revitalization was a multi year vision broken down into 3 phases. Phase 1 was supposed to be implemented by summer 2018 and include relocated attractions, additional green space and beautification of existing lands, as seen in the render below.
https://i.imgur.com/1rIvMWz.jpg So far, it does not appear they have even done anything despite getting funding from the city. |
They just approved $1.5 million (in 2016) to keep working on the plan. It sounded like they had to come back to the city last year with a more detailed design for funding.
