Startup Kudla: Education, Research & Innovations

Listing what are essential subjects on 'analytics' (Artificial Intelligence) to be taught in Mangalore according to me.
  1. Centre of Excellence Health/Medical/Clinical Informatics at proposed NIELIT.
  2. School of Finance & Analytics at Mangalore University College.
  3. School of 'Oil & Gas Informatics' at suggested IIPE (Petroleum University).
  4. School of Aquaculture & Analytics at Fisheries College.
  5. School of Tourism & Analytics (e-tourism).
  6. Centre of excellence for 'Drug/Pharmacy Informatics' & Pharmacoinformatics including 'Marine Pharmacology Informatics' at suggested NIPER.
  7. Centre of Excellence for Materials Science & Engineering with Materials Informatics, Biomaterials Informatics and Nanoinformatics at NITK (Tulunadu & India needs a very strong team of material, nanomaterial and biomaterial scientists).
  8. Maritime Transportation & Logistics Informatics (Water Traffic Management) at proposed Indian Maritime University (IMU). Either IMU or NITK should have facilities for training in Computational Engineering Design & Informatics.
  9. School of Commerce & Analytics (e-commerce).
  10. School of Education Informatics & Innovations (e-education).
  11. Institute of Home Automation & Analytics {1}
  12. Institute of Robotics & Artificial Intelligence
Currently we have Geoinformatics teaching facilities at Mangalore University & NITK and Bioinformatics in Aloysius, NITK and then Health Informatics in Nitte and Manipal universities in Udupi district. Cheminformatics is used by them mainly for drug design. Computational Engineering & Informatics for ship design and Manufacturing Informatics tools may be already available at NITK and Maritime Transportation & Logistics Informatics may be already available in Manipal University. NITK also teaches compuational science/mathematics.

I don't know currently to what an extent facilities are available for teaching Health Informatics or Bioinformatics & Cheminformatics. We need fullfledged 'Centre of Excellence for Health/Medical/Clinical Informatics', 'Centre of Excellence for Biomaterials Informatics' and 'Centre of Excellence for Pharmacoinformatics'. The Centre of Excellence for Health/Medical/Clinical Informatics listed above not only cover all aspects of it & most importantly whatever needed for regerative medicine R&D but could also include alternative medicinal domains like Ayurinformatics, Siddha Informatics etc. But 'Siddha Informatics' can be a part of National Institute of Siddha or NIPER. NIPER should also cover 'Marine Pharmacology Informatics'. The knowledge of Cheminformatics can be useful for non-pharmaceutical chemical R&D also. Nanoinformatics for Nanomedicine & other applications. Optionally NIELIT/BEERI can teach all of these informatics. Other options are Nanoinformatics at proposed Belapu PG Centre and Biomaterials Informatics at proposed CIPET.

Even generalized 'Manufacturing Informatics' (Manufacturing Resource Planning)(or else NITK facilities should be strengthened to cover all types of industries) can be covered separately other than 'Oil & Gas Informatics' as there is plan to develop 'Mangluru CEZ' as a manufacturing hub for food processing, heavy engineering, non-petroleum chemical industries like pharmaceutical industries, medical devices (I am not sure whether the government classify medical devices under pharmacy. The decomposition of economic model is generally reflected on how it splits responsibility among ministries. In one of my next posts I will try to come up with a raw diagram for decomposed 'Mangaluru CEZ' Economic Model.), FMCG, other small/medium/large scale manufacturing industries & self-help group run industries.

Aquacultural Informatics & Aquacultural Information Management at Fisheries College or any of management school like AIMIT or SDM College of Business Management along with Economic/Business Informatics. Earlier I posted this one as Fisheries Informatics & Fisheries Information Management. (Our focus will be now on Maricultural Informatics & Maricultural Information Management. Only difference between 'Fisheries' and 'Aquaculture' is searching for fish schools & hunting). On the other hand, this one could be taught as a part of Agricultural Informatics and Agricultural Information Management itself if we want to cover whole agricultural domain along with horticulture.

Water Traffic Management should cover Highspeed Boat Transit System.

One of the domains which is important for Mangaluru is real estate. 'Real Estate Informatics' can use artificial intelligence for helping all stake holders like builders, constructors, architects, suppliers, logistics providers, agents and clients. As far as 'Construction Informatics' is concerned it is specialized 'Manufacturing Informatics' were manufacturing site shifts from one location to another location with time. For builders, agents and clients it is commercial (e-commerce) activity (and even for constructors, architects, suppliers, logistics providers). And also there is some financial stuffs like any other business/economic activity. 'Real Estate Informatics' domain is not listed above because with the knowledge of other domains people can manage this domain. 'Home Informatics' and 'Architectural Informatics' are separate subjects. To add more to the discussion we have enough 'Virtual and Augmeneted Reality' {1,2} expertize (animation experts) to serve Real Estate domain. CREDAI Mangalore can think about 'School of Real Estate & Analytics'.

In addition, 'Scool of Sports Informatics' can come up along with sports schools & sports institutes at proposed 1000 acres Sports City in Panjimogaru.

'Institute of Home Automation & Analytics' and 'Institute of Robotics & Artificial Intelligence' can be combined together and called 'Institute of Automation & Analytics' or 'Institute of Automation & Artificial Intelligence' and can provide education in home automation, hospital automation, office automation, ship automation, industrial automation, mechatronics/robotics, HVAC etc. Robotics (& mechatronics) inclusion is justified as 'Robot on Internet' (or 'Mechatronic on Internet') is the new trend like IoT. Imagine a mariculturist controlling a marine robot sitting some where else. Institute can also be called 'Institute of IoE' or it can be a department of NIELIT called IoE Department or department of home automation, department of mechatronics/robotics etc and better to leave ship automation as a part of IMU or NITK.

One of way to combine schools of manufacturing, finance, commerce etc is to call them 'School of Goods & Services and Analytics'.

'School of Education Informatics & Innovations' can also be called 'Institute of Education Planning & Innovations'. It should help in planning for all types of educational innovations needed for 'Mangalore CEZ' and beyond. It should help in bringing innovations in nursery, lower, higher, rural & urban educations. {1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11}.

There are also options of teaching so many other specialized informatics subjects like Legal Informatics, Regulatory Informatics (against 'Regulatory & Legal Issues & Mangament' educational course suggested earlier against Biomedical Engineering Education & Research Institute (BEERI) for biomedical device manufacturing which has stringent & complex regulatory requirements as it is a safety-critical domain. For examples, FDA, EMA or CDSCO regulations. Even Water Traffic Control System is a safety-critical domain though regulatory requirements are yet to be developed fully except may be for port & shipping regulations. The pharmaceutical products have to be manufactured under stringent regulations. And also business-critical domains like finance will have its own stringent regulatory requirements. For that matter every domain including real estate has regulatory requirements but not that complex as safety/mission/business-critical domains. Still with home automation real estate may become a more security-critical system.), Computational Informatics, Urban Informatics, Rural Informatics, Architectural Informatics, Space Informatics, Weather Informatics, Environmental Informatics, Earth Science Informatics, Art & Cultural Informatics, Music Informatics, Film Informatics (School of Film Studies can come up at Kapu Film City, Udupi), Social Informatics, Transportation Informatics, Aviation/Flight Informatics (Air Traffic Management), Energy Informatics (can come up along with 'Oil & Gas Informatics' at IIPE), Reliability/Safety/Maintenance Analytics, Predictive Informatics, Research/Innovation Informatics, Astroinformatics, Linguistic Informatics (CLIL R&T Centre, Manipal), Food Informatics (Food Nitrition Informatics along with Health Informatics), Textile Informatics, Fashion Informatics, Mining Informatics (at NITK) or more generalized Economic/Business Informatics (Enterprise Resource Planning) itself. (I think AIMIT is focusing on Economic Informatics already. Sahyadri has Aptra). I have listed above what I felt important for Mangaluru CEZ's 'Domains of Excellence'.

Coming to 'Space Informatics', we may use satellites for Aquaculture/Mariculture/Fisheries Informatics and in general Agricultural Informatics. Then for Transportation Informatics like Water Traffic Management (WTM), Urban/Rural Informatics, Telemedicine/Telehealth etc. And 'Space Informatics' is also useful for identifying all kinds of economic resources within Mangaluru CEZ and would be part of entire 'Economic Informatics'. Good that we will have 'Space Informatics' experts at Alvas Engineering College soon. I think Alvas are initially aiming for Agricultural Informatics with their first satellite. (including mariculture?). We can also think of using satellites for building 'Environmental Informatics' of sea, coastal & westernghat region.

A 'School of Computational Earth Science & Informatics' with 'Environmental Informatics' or 'Ecological Informatics' at Belapu facility of Mangalore University will be useful to study effects of development projects like offshore turbines, desalination plant, Mangala Corniche or Pashchima Vahini on marine, lentic/lotic & terrestrial ecosystems. (as biodiversity study is identified for Belapu centre) {1,2,3}. What I am more interested is effect of vented dams on lotic ecosystem and whether we can reproduce that ecosystem in canals if we maintain a steady flow from vented dams to canals throughout the year. (What is important for vented dams and canals is preserve some area around them for aquatic flora that support aquatic fauna, Probably many of these aquatic plants also have medicinal value. So we can have aquatic medicinal plant horticulture also.) Finally we have to have a computational/animation model for marine, coastal & westernghat ecosystem.

I guestimate all (12 - 1) Informatics/Analytics schools/institutes or centres of excellence put together will cost around Rs. 1000 crores. (-1 because budget for Financial Analytics school is separate. Health Informatics needs more than Rs. 500 crores). If we assume that all informatics schools, NIELIT, NIPER, IIPE, CIPET, IMU, NIOT, NIOS put together costs Rs. 6000 crores then we are spending 5% of Rs. 1.2 lakh crores NH-75 Economic Corridor investment on building Educational Infrastructure in Mangalore. It may go upto 10% if we add educational infrastructure needed in Udupi & Uttara Kannada for 'Mangaluru CEZ' including skill development infrastructure. But whatever infrastructure built on the foundation of educational infrastructure will last for a long time! What we get in return is deeper theoretical understanding of our 'domains of excellence', boost to product based IT startup industry (may not be in all areas listed above in the list of 12 but a selected few domains like finance informatics, selected subjects of health informatics, manufacturing informatics, commerce informatics, tourism informatics, education informatics, home automation and robotics) and also IT products to serve microeconomy. Let me say we should be able to model & develop both microeconomy and macroeconomy as a single 'Mangaluru CEZ Enterprise' and then the country also as a single enterprise.

Note: Computational Modeling/Simulation is assumed in all. For example, Business Informatics means Computational Business Analytics, Nanoinformatics means computational nanotechnology & nanoinformatics,

How about demanding IIPE (Indian Institute of Petroleum & Energy) compulsory before MRPL's 1000 acres expansion plan?
