Hon Hai unveils supercomputer system

Dec. 26 (CNA) Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., the world's largest contract electronics maker, on Tuesday unveiled a supercomputer system with a high performance computing function.

The supercomputer is located in the Kaohsiung Software Park, boasts a computing function equivalent to 5.4 million iPhone Xs and is three times faster than existing supercomputers in Taiwan, Hon Hai said.

The device is the most powerful high performance computer and most efficient supercomputer in the country, the company added.

Hon Hai said the supercomputer can be used for a wide range of applications including medical care, communications, industrial production and environmental engineering.

In addition, the newly unveiled super computer will be connected to customers by optical fiber networks operated by Asia Pacific Telecom Co., a telecom service provider and subsidiary of Hon Hai, that provides services to its customers islandwide, the manufacturing giant said.

The services provided by the supercomputer will include analysis of medical records and sports data as well as artistic and animation applications, Hon Hai said.

Lu Fang-ming (呂芳銘), chairman of Asia Pacific Telecom, said as Taiwan's market is limited in size, Hon Hai has set its sights on the global market, adding the group is expected to seek partners overseas to seize more business opportunities.

Hon Hai, an iPhone and iPad assembler for Apple Inc., is gearing up to diversify its businesses from hardware production to software development in a bid to boost its bottom line.

Shares in the company have come under pressure on the local main board in recent sessions amid concerns over weaker than expected shipments of the premium iPhones, the signature model for the 10th anniversary of the device.

On Tuesday, Hon Hai shares closed down 0.98 percent at NT$91.20 (US$2.77) on the main board.
