White Rock Receives Federal Funding for Upgraded Rail Crossings

The federal government has pledged $2.3 million to help upgrade four pedestrian rail crossings and build a pedestrian rail overpass in White Rock.

"We're thrilled with the announcement," said Coun. Grant Meyer.

"We think this'll definitely improve safety for our residents and guests."

Transport Canada, though the Rail Safety Investment Program, will pay for about 50 percent of the cost of upgraded pedestrian crossings at Bay Street, Finlay Street, Ash Street, and Balsam Street.

Currently the crossings have signs, fencing, and inserts to make the tracks easy to cross.

"They are designated crossings, but other than signage and approach ramps there is nothing else," Meyer said.

Upgrades will include lights and bells.

Gate arms will be installed where vehicle access is allowed.

BNSF Railway, which owns and maintains the tracks, will contribute 37.5 percent of the cost of upgrading the crossings, and the city will pay the remaining 12.5 percent.

The Coldicutt overpass will be constructed to improve access to the west beach.

Transport Canada will contribute $500,000 to that project, while the city will pay the remaining $1.7 million.

Meyer said the frequency and length of trains running through White Rock have increased dramatically in recent years and there have been numerous deaths and close calls involving pedestrians on the tracks.

He hopes to see the upgrades begin as soon as possible, particularly with the busy summer season approaching.

The projects must be complete by 31 Mar 2018.

I wonder what it would take to boost track speeds through that segment
