You are right, many of these pictures were not painted in the United States. They arrived from Europe one by one and after some time became important pieces of a
new whole. A new collection of cultural treasures that inspired a
newer, wholly native generation of American artists. In this sense they are very American. As American as all of those great European, African, Asian and Latino immigrants who also came here one by one and made our country what it is.
