Following their Eurovision Song Contest win last summer, Azerbaijan rushed to commission German firm GMP Architekten to design a new stadium that will be complete in time to host this year’s competition.

D-hotel, Marke, Belgium
Govaert & Vanhoutte Architects celebrated for sleek transformation of windmill in Marke

D-hotel is an extension and reconversion of an existing farm and mill site into a hotel, designed by Govaert & Vanhoutte Architects. A cluster of three concrete volumes gather around a U-shaped farm building and a protected renovated windmill. The old and new entities have no direct contact above the surface, though underground there is a tunnel that runs beneath the old farm, forming the base of the concept. Starting from the hotel reception, the tunnel disappears under the inner square through a contemporary glass volume.

isabel bennasar: nursery school in alaba street

bound by four prominent streets within a city block in barcelona, spain, the 'nursery school in àlaba street' designed by barcelonian architect isabel bennasar projects a solid facade towards the urban context. within a complex which includes an equipment area to the west and plot for future green space to the east, the single-storey center is inverted, opening the internal void between two building volumes into an outdoor courtyard for daytime activity. bounded with a permeable facade, nine groups within clusters of classrooms have direct access to a communal yard.
