the scale of shanghai felt a bit like chicago, actually, with some re-arrangements vis-à-vis the position of the river dividing the mega-highrise district from the bund and beyond the other direction. that model only fell apart when i started taking the metro around and then left the city only to see many miles of mid-rise suburbia stretching to the horizon. there was a much less intense euro-american presence on the streets of certain districts than i actually expected. on the flipside, there were more global-moneyed class types from south america and even africa than i expected. and bus after bus of grey headed austrialian retirees!
